I didn't really know Bernie, except as someone who always said, "Hi," to me when we passed in the hall. But when he was teaching his class on children with special needs, next to my office, I always left the door open because listening to him teach and work with his students was delightful. Not only did Bernie have a great sense of humor (and a voice that carried!), but he also was an excellent professor: he knew how to teach, and he cared about his students. What's even more amazing, however, is that his students really cared about him, and that's rare. Bernie could not walk down the halls at Salem State without students asking him how he was, how was his weekend? The students don't treat anyone else like that. They could see that Bernie was special.

Bern, you will never be gone because you will forever remembered, thought about, and missed. I'll always remember talking about our diabetes, my boyfriend troubles, and complaining about all the stairs in Sullivan! It's tragic that you're gone, only because there are so many people who will never have the chance to meet you! Among many, I will always remember you, and talk about all the funny, crazy happenings in class, and how amazing you were to me, and all your students. Although you won't be able to walk through the halls and have EVERYONE you passed say, "HEY BERN" you won't be gone....you'll live on forever. I love ya Bern!

Bernie was the best person to ever step into SSC and he will be so greatly missed. The education dept, will never be the same. the genuine care for all the studunts is not something that i've seen at salem state, but some way bernie was able to show it.
My prayers go out to the family.

To the family of "Bernie",
I was a student of his at SSC. Every time I saw him he would make my day(even if he asked a million questions about my boyfriend or what I was doing with my life). haha. His sense of humor always made me smile and his passion for teaching inspired me. As an asset to the college, Bernie will be missed by us all. My thoughts and prayers are with you!

I never knew Bernie personally. I had heard so many great things about him and seen the way people lit up when he walked through the halls. I had planned to take his class in the fall and was looking forward to it. To the O'Rourke family, I have great sympathy for your loss.
