Helen Cullen Obituary

88, of Harwich, died Saturday, August 25, 2007 in Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, MA. Helen was born on January 4, 1919 in Dorchester, MA. She was the daughter of the late James and Letitia (Johnson) Cullen. She attended Boston Latin School, and graduated from Radcliffe College and received her PhD from the University of Michigan. After leaving the University of Michigan, she taught for many years in the Mathematics Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, retiring as Professor emeritus. While there she was the author of many scholarly articles and books, Introduction to general topology, her chosen field of Mathematics. She leaves one brother: William Cullen of Medford, MA; one nephew: Brian Cullen of Boxborough, MA; one niece: Cynthia Cullen of Bellingham, MA; and great nephew: Jay Mele of Bellingham, MA. She was the sister of the late James and John Cullen. Her visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, CHATHAM, MA, followed by her Funeral Service in the Christ Church Episcopal, 671 Main Street, Harwichport, MA, at 1:00 p.m. Her burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Route 137, East Harwich, MA. Memorial Donations may be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice.
