Dick Tellis was a wonderful man, a great writer and a steadfast friend to me and to Amazing Things. An extremely bright, honorable and wise man, I could always count on Dick for excellent advice through the 10 years that I knew him.
Dick was a volunteer of the highest order. Someone who we could trust completely to do exactly what he committed to do. But – besides his work as our first effective volunteer coordinator, a solid and trustworthy call when someone needed in a pinch – Dick Tellis’ love was the Theater. Dick helped develop our company 10 years ago, and continued his involvement as director, producer, technical director, makeup artist and actor for the rest of his life.
One thing you could count on from Dick Tellis was candor. It was his absolute responsibility to me and to others to give them an honest assessment of any situation – no matter how painful it was to give or to hear. He carried out this difficult task in the kindest of ways – always offering solutions along with any criticism. This honesty and forthrightness WAS Dick Tellis.
Dick spent his professional career writing advertising copy and that skill showed strongly in his “on the money” and “hard hitting” letters to the editor that he wrote in times of Amazing Things Arts Center need. Dick also wrote a book (of which I am a proud owner of an autographed copy) named “Once Around the Bases”. Here’s a write-up:
http://www.antonnews.com/roslynnews/1998/07/17/news/onegame.html – a delightful compendium of the careers of professional baseball players who played in one game and one game only in the Major Leagues.
A couple of days before he left us, we talked on the phone and we said goodbye. Dick departed as gracefully as he lived. I was lucky to be able to tell him I loved him and luckier to simply have known him. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by the Amazing family.
