I was saddened and surprised to hear of Kevin’s passing. My dad (Henry Florentine) knew Kevin as a young boy and as the great man he came to be. He did so much for the people of Mission Hill and he did it with great pride. We moved away many years ago, but we have carried many wonderful memories of the place and the people that touched our lives forever. . My family always says you can take the kid out of the Hill but you can never take the Hill out of the kid. On behalf of the Florentine’s from Tremont Street I want to send our thoughts & prayers to your family and to all the hearts & lives he touched throughout his life.

The name KEVIN is of Celtic origin meaning "gentle and loving"--a most apropos choice of names by his parents. Accept my sincerest sympathy to the entire Fitgerald family.

I remember Kevin Fitzgerald very well....one of the happiest days of my life when I was married at Mission Church a few years back...As I was getting out of the limousine to walk up the few steps, my dress needed some "fluffing" and a gentleman walking by, not only held my bouguet but fluffed my dress as well....It was Kevin....
It brings back tears as I write it now but I will never forget the kind gesture when I needed it. He also wished me every happiness and good luck.....

Where have the years gone...Kevin we hardly knew you....

Our deepest sympathy

We loved Kevin so much. His smile was contagious. He made every event so much more fun, every person feel so special and just made the world a much better place. His legacy will live on in his children and all the people whose lives he touched. Reading over all the thoughts that people have written and hearing about the funeral -that there was none like it- makes us miss Boston and Mission Hill more than ever.

October 5, 2007

It's rare in our life times that we meet and are immediately touched by someone. Their smile, their laugh, the way they played ball, the way they humbly became president of student council, the way they always had time to talk and to make you feel like you had always been their friend ... that was our Kevin. The Kevin who was the best of us. Kevin belonged to his beloved Trisha, his children, his brother, sisters and family and yet he belonged to each of us. How blessed we were to have known and loved him. As the years went on we learned all that Kevin had done for so many ... not from him, that wasn't his way but from all those who were also proud to say sure we know Kevin for they to knew that Kevin was the best of us. Thank you Kevin for being who you were and thank you Tricia and all the family for sharing Kevin with all of us. Oh, how sorely he will be missed ... Dear Fitzgerald Family:
Kevin’s many friends at the Jamaica Plain NDC were very sad to hear that this warm, energetic and passionate man was taken from us. He was one of the very best advocates JPNDC and groups like ours had in public life. More times than we can count, when times were tough on Beacon Hill and our cause looked bleak, Kevin came through for our community. Whether it was support for affordable housing, programs for children, access to health care, or a host of great causes, Kevin was a true believer and he had the energy to make things happen. Unlike some people who get close to power and are afraid to buck the system, Fitzie had the courage to stand up to very powerful people and he managed to win many battles that others considered unwinnable.

Our community has lost a very special person with Kevin’s passing and I suspect that he would want nothing more than for all of us to keep doing our work with the energy and passion that he showed every day of his life. We know your loss is incalculable and we offer our deepest sympathies.

October 4, 2007

To the Fitzgerald family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you at this time of need. Kevin has always been there when you needed him. I remember when I made one phone call to him to see if he would come to a party and give my son, Paul a certificate for serving in Iraq the 2nd time, he never hesitated. He showed up at the party and made everyone feel comfortable around him. I have known Kevin for many years and am proud to call him my friend. Kevin will be greatly missed.

Keep the good memories,

Dear Fitzgerald family:
I used to referee CYO basketball games and I'd sometimes see Kevin in the gym, either watching his kids play or coaching. Unlike most coaches and parents, Kevin kept things light and easy, even when the game got intense. He was an absolute gentleman, and the perfect mentor for the players. The embodiment of class. Please know that many, many people like myself who only knew Kevin from a distance were touched by him and impressed by him. May your memories of him help you get through this very difficult time.

Dotti Mullins

October 4, 2007

To the Fitzgerald Family,
God looked down from the heavens and the clouds began to roll. He said, "Now it is time For Me to call this soul". And so He sweetly called Kevin's name out loud, and said, "Come unto Me", then rolled back the clouds. Sometimes the voice of God is hard to understand, when it interrupts our lives and reveals a difficult plan. Even in the midst of the sudden storm, the voice of God will comfort and miraculously perform. It will speak unto your heart and create a peace within, that will calm and keep you and shield against the wind. God is speaking from the heavens: "Just look unto the hills. I may have called Kevin, but his spirit is with you still."

My deepest sympathy

Although I did not know Kevin Fitz personally, I grew up on the Hill & my parents (Bruce & Hildi Keary) knew him well. His advocacy for our dear neighborhood was unsurpassed. Now I am a nurse at Children's Hospital, and the entire Children's community is mourning the loss of one of our greatest champions on Beacon Hill. I would like to express my deepest sympathies to the entire Fitzgerald family; there is no doubt that he will be sorely missed. May you find peace and comfort in his memory during this difficult time.

To the family of Kevin. I express my deepest regrets. I went to Saint Anselms with Kevin and Jerry McLean and I have had sporadic contact with both of them over the years but the friendship ran deep. If ever i needed Sox tickets I'd call Jerry and he would call Kevin. As the wonderful article in the Globe said Kevin was defined by never forgetting where he came from or who he met along the way. I will be unable to make the funeral but my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family. Once a Hawk(St A's) always a Hawk. Rick Wood St. A's 69

Dear Trisha and Kids: I can't imagine. Your such a special family. Kevin, being such a wonderful person, obviously chose the perfect wife. You've stood by him through thick and thin and I know you will now. The inner strength I've seen in you, I know will carry you through. This is a shock to me. Bobby Finneran was giving me updates and the last I heard he was doing well. I'm sorry I wasn't more informed. I understand you opened your home to friends and relatives; what a women. Keep strong, hold onto your family and let them help you. Your family always stood by each other and now you'll need them more than ever. God Bless you and the children.

To the Fizgerald family,
Kevin bridged multiple generations in Mission Hill and throughtout Boston. He was a leader who knew how to reach out and make personal connections with perfect strangers. And, once he learned that you had a Mission Hill connection, he took you in as one of his own. I have very vivid memories of him, sitting in our front room, siping tea with my Dad, Bill Murphy. When I went to Mission, I already felt that I belonged because he and my cousins made me feel welcome. He was a decent man who changed the lives of so many. A person could ask for no more. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Trishia, Madeline, and the Boys,

On behalf of my family, I would like to say how deeply sorry we all are for Kevin's loss. He was, without exception, one of life's biggest givers. No one lived life like Kevin did. He loved everyone, and made sure we all knew it. He had a constant twinkle in his eyes, and his hug was a warm one. I loved working for Kevin when he was a rep., and I learned by watching him interact with people from all walks of life. Most of all though, I am indebted to Kevin for being a true friend to my father. He never gave up on my Dad, and he saw the best in him.
You are in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you for sharing such a man with so many of us. And Kevin, thanks for everything.

Love, Kathy Cloherty

IN 1955 MY PARENTS ARCHIE & RITA SMITH. MOVED FROM CATHEDRAL PROJECTS TO 11 SUNSET ST. MISSION HILL. KEVIN AND HIS FAMILY LIVED DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM US. AS YOUNG CHILDREN MY BROTHER RUSSELL, MYSELF EDWARD, WE GREW UP TO BE BEST FRIENDS. THOSE WERE WONDERFUL TIMES UP ON THE HILL, PLAYING BASKET BALL ON ELDORA ST., PLAYING KICK THE CAN, EXPLORING THROUGH THE HAUNTED HOUSE ON CORNER OF ELDORA JUST AS YOU TURN DOWN THE STREET, THE CROSSING STREET WAS HILLSIDE AVE. WE RODE OUR BIKES TO THE JAMAICA WAY, ONE PLACE THERE WE CALLED THE SUGAR BOWL, A BIG ROUND INCLINE, WE WOULD DRIVE DOWN AND UP THE HILL. WE EXPLORED BROOKLINE, WE RODE THE T, PRETENDING WE WAS CHARLIE ON THE MTA. WE WOULD SOMETIME RIDE IT ALMOST ALL DAY. WE DID A LOT OF EXPLORING, WE ALL WERE LIKE THE LITTLE RASCALS. THE FITZGERALD FAMILY LOST A TERRIFIC SON, AND I WISH I HAD KNOWN HE WAS ILL. I USE TO STOP IN ONCE AND AWHILE, WHEN HE WAS A REP, AND THE LAST TIME WHEN HE WAS SERGEANT OF ARMS. HE WAS ALWAYS SMILING AND WOULD HELP ANYONE OUT, FROM TRYING TO FIND A JOB, OR JUST HELP FROM THE RIGHT AGENCY'S. HE WILL BE DEARLY MISSED. GOOD BYE KEVIN(FITZY)FITZGERALD. YOU NEVER FORGET YOUR BEST FRIENDS FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD. MY WHOLE FAMILY, WISH THE BEST FOR KEVIN'S WIFE PATRICIA, AND HIS CHILDREN AND WHOLE FAMILY. LOVE SMITTY.

This world has lost a most humble, caring, and selfless person of which there are so few.
Kevin was loved, respected and admired by everyone whose lives he touched as a community leader, neighbor and friend.
My heartfelt sympathy and prayers to Trish and the entire Fitzgerald family.

Trisha- I'm so, so sorry for your loss. Kevin was filled with giving and goodness - his attitude was contagious. He was the best advocate for Mission Hill ever. He did more for the Hill than anyone, the whole community will feel this huge loss. Buzz Farquhar

Dear Trish, and the rest of the Fitzgerald family:

I want to express my deepest sympathy. I had the honor to meet, work and share a unique bond with Kevin over the years, He really help shape and guide me into the person I am today.

He knew me when I was a gang involved kid hanging out on the street corners of Egleston Square -- I was illiterate with no hope for a future, and that lifestyle lead me to prison. Were Kevin and I got disconnected for while, when I was release after 6 years Kevin was one of the first individuals who would embrace me and lend me his services as I attempted to piece back together a meaningful life. Kevin always believed in helping people and that was evident in my case.

Kevin always saw the potential I had, his belief in me helped me overcome some major obstacles in my life after prison. Today, I dedicated my life to public service, I graduated from college with an undergraduate degree in criminal justice, and I am presently working on my MBA. I am the Operations Director of Youth Enrichment Services and was honor to serve with Kevin on various advisory and community committees over the years.

In the 20 plus years after meeting Kevin in Egleston Square at St. Mary’s Church I have learn that Kevin, was the kind of man who would never give up on people, he dedicated his life in empowering everyone he came in contact with, he was strong enough to know when to lead, and was humble enough to allow others to lead so he can learn from the process of following. He was an incredible example to me and I pray that throughout my lifetime, I will be able to build upon his legacy and pass on his lessons as a living example.

He was great man who meant a great deal too many people, but to me he was my hero. I will miss his presences but his spirit I will carry always in my heart, life, and work.

Trish,

We are really with you and your family during this sad time. Kevin was truly a son of Roxbury and my friend.

My mother and father loved your Kevin very much. Especially when he put in the Mission Hill link. Kevin also talked me through some very difficult times in my personal life.

He was my brother.

I'm sure that I'm not alone in saying that I miss Kevin so much already. He always has been and always will be one of my strongest role models in life. In life and in death, he inspires me to always focus on taking care of family, taking care of friends and doing the right thing because that is what he spent his entire life doing. What a great man. I love you Kevin and know that you are in everlasting peace now.
