I worked with Ritchie during the early 70's st Kneeland St. He and I were firemen for Boston Edison Co.
He went on to work at Pilgrim station in Plymouth Ma.

He was a great person. I have an old picture that I took of him when he was around 2or 25 years old. I'll try to find it and somehow send it to his family.

To Rich's family: after I returned home following the viewing, I wrote the following....

A friend of mine died Tuesday. We met a few years ago at a Cancer Support Group meeting. Rich was in his second bout with cancer. He had been diagnosed some years ago with Stage 3 lung cancer, which he beat. Chemo and radiation twice a day for a year.

This time, it was pancreatic cancer. Rich was no dummy. He knew the score, but never once did I hear him utter a self-serving word. Never once did I hear him complain. He simply did what he had to do. Some months ago, he had to get a colostomy bag. He showed it off at one of our meetings...hidden inside a velvet Crown Royal bag.

Rich was from Boston, and was a big-time fan of the Red Sox and the Patriots. As some of you know, I'm a Yankee fan. We would banter back and forth about the respective merits of our favorite teams, trading insults and barbs, all in good humor.

I was made aware that Rich was in the hospital with pneumonia a few weeks ago. I telephoned him in his room, and made an appointment to visit him the next day. I was, it seems, one of the first people he told that his cancer had spread to his lungs, and he had "...maybe two days, maybe two weeks." One of his two daughters came in to his room, and he was gracious enough to introduce me to her as "My friend Roy".

Rich was my hero. There are a few people you meet in this world whose mere presence makes it a better place. I am quite fortunate to have met Rich. I am a better person for the experience.

This year, in Rich's honor, I will root for the Red Sox. I hope they win it all, because Rich would so love that.

May each and every one of you find at least one Rich to enter your life, even if only for a little while.
Remember to tell those you love and those who love you how much they mean to you.

Uncle Richie, you were one of the strongest men that I have ever know. You touched so many with your sense of humor and the way you lived your life. You even taught me how to dance! I will love you always. You will forever be in my memories. I know you are looking down on us with a halo over your head with that same Uncle Richie smile.

Uncle Ritchie,
I will miss you always. I will remember you forever. All the times you babysat us when you were a teen and young man: piggyback rides and antidisestablishmenterrianism. These are things that are dear to my heart as you are. I smile when I recall them. My sisters and I always have a great laugh when we think back on those times. You were a wonderful uncle with an infectious smile and a great personality. God Bless You with eternal grace in heaven. I love you and will miss you.

My sympathy goes out to all "Richin" family and friends. May God comfort all of you. We have lost a very special man. No matter how much I felt sorry for myself or how depressed I was, a talk with "Hop Sping" would lift me up. And Rich could do this even though he was suffering much more than I. I'm sure that Heaven is an even better place now.

My thoughts and prayers are with Rich's Family, may God's Grace comfort you in this time of sorrow. I have known and worked with Rich for many years and I can honestly say he was the most positive, charismatic, upbeat person that I have ever met. It has been an honor and a pleasure to have known him. His caring, compassionate personality was contagious. His lively sense of humor was uplifting. Things must have been getting boring in Heaven that God called him home so early in his life.
