As I wrote this tribute to Marc which I would have given at his funeral service had there been time I came to the realization that to try to sum up the incredibly gifted and talented person that he was would be quite a challenge but then I remembered that Marc never met a challenge he didn’t like. When we were kids we faced the challenge of trying to tackle his brother Chris at the annual football game at aunt Pat’s and Uncle Brads, which by the way we never did. We would just lay there in a heap after Chris went by us and as he celebrated in the end zone we would pick ourselves up muddy and bruised and Marc would say next time we will just tackle him in the huddle. Marc was always thinking outside the box. When he was visiting once my car broke down on a Saturday afternoon. He diagnosed the problem and wanted to go to the parts store. I had to tell him that there was nothing open at this time of night in our small town. He looked at his watch and exclaimed its six o’clock on a Saturday…where is everybody at the county square dance? When my wife came in and said can you guys fix it he never let on there was a problem he just said yes but it’s going to be an adventure. Marc always gave of himself to others despite his own challenges. His selflessness reminds me of the parable of the two men stranded on a deserted island. They decide to divide the island into two parts and then pray to God for what they needed. Being on separate parts of the island would let them know whose prayers were answered. When one man prayed for his many needs and they were all fulfilled he would rejoice that he was the more favored of God. God then spoke to him and said don’t you want to share with your friend? The blessed man said to God why should I none of his prayers were answered God explained that the only reason he had been given anything was because the other man had only prayed that all his friends prayers be answered. That was Marc. Whether it was in his work, his family or friends he always gave of himself to others. Although he is now at rest, he lives on in each one of us whose lives he touched with his many gifts.
