Joy Huntington Roeder

Of South Freeport, Maine, passed away November 30, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was at home when she passed on after countless weeks of visits from friends and family who shared their love and goodbyes. Joy was born on June 29, 1942 in Washington, DC. After living in Westport, Connecticut for several years, she moved with her family to Falls Church, Virginia in 1948 where she remained and graduated from high school. She went to Gettysburg College where she majored in Political Science and graduated Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa in 1964. There Joy met her husband, Lee Roeder, and they were married the summer following her graduation. Joy and Lee spent 24 years living in Sherborn, Massachusetts before moving to South Freeport, Maine in 1994. The Huntington family were early settlers in this country and Joy was proud to be President of Colonial Dames of Maine for 3 years. Recently, she enjoyed spending winters in Sanibel, Florida with her husband and family. Joy's family members include her husband, Lee Roeder of South Freeport, Maine, her daughter Kristen Lee Roeder of Amherst, Massachusetts, and her two sons, Lee Huntington Roeder of New York, New York and Braden Albert Roeder of Natick, Massachusetts; two daughters-in-law, Nancy Chivas Roeder and Melissa Bouffard Roeder, and four grandchildren including Arianna Joy Roeder-Fabos, Hayden Lee Roeder, Jackson Huntington Roeder and Carson Finley Roeder; one brother, Albert Henry Huntington III; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Joy was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2004. Her unshakeable spirit offered her loved ones strength as she faced the disease hopeful, uncomplaining and ever gracious. Joy will be remembered forever as a beautiful, generous and creative woman with vibrant energy she shared with all. Joy was a uniquely talented artist and known for her knitting, quilts and needlepoint. Always a "joy" to be around, Joy brightened everyone's spirit and was a gift to us all. She will be greatly missed by those she left but her caring spirit remains with all she loved and who loved her. A memorial service to celebrate Joy's life will be held at the South Freeport Church on Thursday, December 6th at 2:00 PM.
