To the Croken family, so sorry to hear about your loss. I am living in Brazil, which is why I wasn't able to pay my respects in person. My father, John, knew and liked many people, but only a few did he hold in the high esteem that he had for Joe. I, personally, was helped several times by Joe and I will never forget the many things that he did for me and my family over the years. Such a great man with such a warm and lovely smile!

I will miss Joe very much. He was a very special person and I enjoyed our conversations. I was lucky enough to see Joe quite often during the last 15 years when I worked occasionally in Malden or had business at the court. I was extremely proud and honored to have had Joe at our table at the annual Boston Semper Fidelis Society Marine Corps luncheon for the last couple of years. Like my father, John Jarvis, Joe was part of the greatest generation. They both cared very much for their fellow veterans and had a tremendous respect for their fellow Maldonians. Joe was the personification of sacrifice and dedication to family, friends and community. Joe was also the epitome of dedication and service to family, country and Corps! Joe cared for people and helped many over the years. He will be especially missed by those of us in law enforcement. Thank you for being a great Marine and a great American! Now, it is even a greater honor for me to have my name along with yours on the same plaque at Malden City Hall honoring ALL Malden Marine veterans.
Semper Fidelis JOE!

Claire, Joanne, Charlene and Joey,
when I heard the news of Joe's passing, I felt my heart drop to the pit of my stomach. Joe was my good friend and neighbor, who helped me countless times when I was younger and got myself into many a jam. He was very good to my Father and the rest of my family as well!
Even though I was a troubled youth, Joe always believed in me and encouraged my talent every time I saw him (almost every day), and even showed his unwavering support for me by often coming out to my shows with Claire and the rest of the neighborhood. I will never forget that, as long as I live!
Claire, any time you see my truck outside, Joey isn't around and you need a hand with anything, just call! Joe was a Great guy, a Hero who served as part of America's greatest generation (WWII) and will be sorely missed by all who knew him! May God In Christ Jesus Comfort you all during this difficult time!

Mr. Croken,
Sir, I didn't know you but as a fellow Marine I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the USMC during WW II fighting the Japanese in the Pacific. It was the history and accomplishments made by you and your fellow Marines at Bouganville in the Solomon Islands and other places during WW II that all of us Marines who followed in your footsteps have always tried to live up to. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Joe Croken was a friend and a mentor to countless young attorney's like myself, who walked into jobs as ADA's and defense attorneys without experience, and walked out his Courthouse trained and confident.
His view of the world, expressed each and every day through his actions, included a kind word and a warm smile for all.
In a building where sadness is too often the norm, Joe refused to be brought down, but instead uplifted all whose paths were lucky enough to have crossed his.
When my time came to leave the Courthouse, Joe wrote a note that I framed and hung in my new office. The last line says, "I'm sure our paths will cross again, along the way."
I never left the path that he so generously helped me navigate when I knew so little, and his real legacy is that he will remain a part of all the people whose lives he touched, and whose lives touched his.

On behalf of my dad, Walter, the entire Sullivan family and myself, I want to express our deepest sympathies. He has been a friend of ours for two generations.
Joe was one of a kind and a true gentleman. I was with him Saturday night and as always enjoyed his company – he would make everyone feel special.
His fellow clerks, trial court employees and the people he came in contact on a daily basis will miss him greatly. We are truly better for having known him.
As in the movie a “Wonderful Life,” Joe touched many people and made a difference in our lives.
Again our heartfelt condolences,
