Dear Bruce and family: I have had the honor of working side by side with Janet at D'Youville and she was never too busy to help me or to listen to me. She was one of the few people at D'Youville who saw that I was more than just a nurse, and she helped me learn how to show my strength as a human being. She had continuous ability to "seize the day". I consider myself blessed for having known her. I regret not being able to attend the "Irish wake" but will certainly have fond memories and raise a toast to my friend and mentor. My thoughts are with you all.

Dear Bruce,

I had the pleasure of working with Janet at D'Youville for two years and during that time I learned so much from her that I continue to take with me in my day to day life.

Janet expressed to me her joy that I had returned to school and I will continue to make her proud by graduating and continuing my education.

I know Janet faught hard over the past few years to beat her illness and I know you and she had great adventures during those years. Always remember the days spent because she was truly enjoying life.

How ironic that it snowed the day of her Memorial, she would have loved to have been on the slopes!

My deepest sympathy and my constant prayers to Janet.

I met Janet as she hired me at D'youville Senior Care Center in January 2002! That was the new beginning of my career as a professional Social Worker in the Long-term Care Industry. I came to know a courageous, well respected WOMAN, who never backed down from a challenge and who always encouraged her staff to be their best. She spread her strength to others with courtesy, clear direction and support. As I worked with her, I grew by her example of professionalism and learned the true definition of TEAM. She was a tremendous leader. I respected her so much and feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to have worked with her/for her and to have learned so much from her. I am so blessed to say that Janet Smith was turely one of my biggest mentors and am so grateful to have been part of her TEAM! I pray that each of you are blessed with the peace and love that she so easily portrayed as a professional Administrator/colleague.
May your days be filled with the Joy of knowing you had such a wonderful and courageous woman in your lives.
{Janet, I will miss not seeing your beautiful smile at the periodic conferances we would run into each other at.}
Peace and Blessings.
Always,
Mary Ellen "MEG"

My heart goes out to all of you during this difficult time. Janet was such a passionate person with an incredible spirit-she always would go that extra mile to get things done without any fear of the challenge and she leaves those gifts of strength, courage, wisdom, and financial business sense as a legacy to all of you. She always had that determination and a smile that lit up any room with that twinkle in her eye. She was truely a remarkable woman and I feel so fortunate to have worked with her. her life was one worth celebrating! May time bring you inner peace and comfort to heal your broken hearts. Sincerely, Kathy Gagan D'Youville Senior Care

Dear Bruce and Family:
Peace be with you. I am so sorry for your loss.

My plan to attend Janet's Memorial Service has unfortunately changed; very sadly I will not be there. She is in my prayer and in my heart.

In September Janet asked if I would say a prayer or do a Reading at her service - I told her I would be honored. This is what I would have said [with Janet "by my side"]:

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Janet several years ago. She was a fabulous CEO and I learned much from her beautiful balance of professionalism and compassion. NOTHING was ever "Not her job".

She listened....she took the time to listen...and she took you seriously. In fact, Janet took the time to seriously listen when I made a plea for the Alzheimer Residents to have a balconey on the second floor. Janet happily surprised me with plans drawn up in less than a month - and she had that balconey built!!

Over those years, and since, we shared of ourselves professionally, in friendship, and in Christ. She was an inspiration to me and I will miss her.

This is the simple and humble prayer that I would have prayed for those gathered in her memory:
"The Lord bless you and keep you. May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May He look upon you with kindness and give you His peace."

God bless you Janet.
