Becky was a dear friend whom I loved and walked softly with for 30 years. She had a wonderful, loving, insightful spirit. We spent lots of time together enjoying special music and events such as cleaning up the environment on Earth Day and toasting our efforts with champagne. There will be no one like her in my life and I will miss her the rest of it. My husband and I considered Becky to be among our very best friends, and we are saddened beyond words at her illness and loss.

Becky and I shared a love of animals and in her memory through 10th Chance Animal Rescue, a non-profit, no kill, cat and kitten rescue organization, the REBECCA NEISS RESCUED ANGELS MEMORIAL FUND has been created. 100% of the monies donated to Becky's fund will be used to further the work of trapping and socializing mommy cats and kittens born outside, as well as rescuing friendly strays off the street and getting them fully vetted (spayed/neutered/vaccinated), and placed up for adoption to loving homes through my weekly adoption shows at PetSmart. Each kitty saved through THE REBECCA NEISS RESCUED ANGELS MEMORIAL FUND will be referred to as “Becky’s Angel.” Companion animals are like angels in the lives of those of us who love and learn from them. I can’t think of anything I can do that better signifies Becky's kind and loving way with animals than to rescue homeless animals in her name.

I am thrilled to say that Becky's first Angel (a little calico kitten resuced from a garage on Forrest Avenue in Buffalo and bottle-fed until old enough to eat on her own) met some of Becky's friends and family and will be adopted by a couple who are among Becky's closest friends. This is a kitten I had hoped Becky could foster as she considered doing so prior to becoming so ill. If you want more information on THE REBECCA NEISS RESCUED ANGELS MEMORIAL FUND, please contact me.

Becky was blessed to have such good friends and loving family members and all her friends and loved ones have been blessed to know her and have her in their lives. Her loss is profound.

God speed old friend, until we meet again.

Dear Mrs. Neiss, Johnny, Sharon, Jimmy, and Chuckie, Please accept our sincere condolences, I heard about Becky's passing from our daughter and her husband who still live on Ferndale. We will always remember the games of hide and seek Jimmy, Chuckie and Becky played at dusk in our yard, when you all were little, and I especially remember the times you all played with my niece and nephew, Mark and Donna and the other neighborhood kids, we will never forget the nice conversations Larry and I had in your "family garage" with you Mom and Dad and a few "cold ones" on a hot summers night. Becky was always the little shy girl with the sweet smile who obviously grew up to be a special friend to many....her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, and you will draw the family circle tighter in her passing, and I just know that your Dad has welcomed her into heaven with open arms...Sincerely,

Sherry Stanley

Becky was my best friend and the sister I never had. We spent 37 years together full of memories - fun, sweet and sometimes sad. Becky was a beautiful, living soul and was one the most authentic people I knew....I am who I am because of how she touched and molded my life. I miss Becky so much and grieve her absence deeply…….

Good night, good night.

Thanks to everyone who signed this guestbook. I had no idea how many friends my little sister had, but am not surprised. She was my little sister and a very close friend. I thought she would outlive all of us. I guess God had special plans for her. The good part is that he spared her from pain and all the anxiety she would have had to go through had this illness dragged on.
I love you, Seester...

Former Economics Grad Student

July 8, 2008

I was a grad student in the Economics department around 1989 or 1990. Rebecca was one of the nicest people I've ever had the privelege to meet.

Many years later, (15 maybe?) after dropping out of the department, I ran into her. Even though I was pretty undistinguished in the deparment, she remembered my name and what I had been taking there.

I was truly surprised and saddened to read about her death. My deepest sympathies and prayers go with you.

Dear Chuck, Jim and the entire Neiss family:
My hearfelt sympathies to all about the passing of your sister Becky. I knew her a little when she would come to gigs of Arlanza. I remember her as a warm and very nice person. From reading the entries in the guest book, she clearly touched many people and I am sure was a source of great love, comfort and inspiration to all of you. Take care and I wish you all love and good health in the future.

We are so sorry for your loss. With caring thoughts and deepest sympathy, please take some comfort in knowing how many thoughts & prayers are with you.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a 1,000 winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sun on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled light
I am the soft star that shines at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there; I did not die.

As a graduate student in the department of economics in the late 1980s and earlier 1990s, I was privileged with Becky’s support and friendship. Her dedication to the department, and everyone that was part of it, was a source of inspiration to all. Two year ago, while traveling to Western New York, I stopped by the department and saw Becky for the last time. It was summer time, only a few people were in their offices, but Becky was there and with delight she talked about the accomplishments of faculty, staff, and graduate students - present and past - as if they were part of her own family. It is hard to believe that she is no longer with us. She will be truly missed.

Jim and family,
I never met your sister but in glancing through all these entries I feel like I truly missed out on getting to know a very special person. She was obviously loved and cared for deeply, and you should take solace in that knowledge. Becky was a dear friend and confidante to a group of Assistant Profs and grad students who passed through the Department of Economics in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Her porch was where we all gathered on a warm summer evening. Long after we had gone our separate ways she kept in touch with each one of us and helped us stay in touch with each other. To her family, please know that Becky's old friends have her in their thoughts.

Dear Neiss Family,

We are so sorry for the loss of your daughter and your sister. Becky always had a big smile and a warm soul, she will be missed tremendously. Sometimes special people touch our lives in a way that no one else does, and Becky did that. She always had a good word, a funny story, and Bailey at her heels. Becky taught us all to enjoy the journey of life, it is so sad that her journey was cut short with all of us, but we will stop and "smell the roses" in her memory. Her journey has taken her to a better place, the best place, where she is healed and happy once again. We will always remember Becky as a bright light in our lives. You are all in our thoughts and our prayers.
