George Schum Obituary

SCHUM - George Age 57 of Windermere, FL, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 29, 2008, surrounded by his wife and friends after a courageous battle against non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Marianne. Family survivors include: mother, Phyllis S. Schum of Alden, NY; sister, Maryanne (Gerald) Gangloff of Raleigh, NC; brother, James C. (Renae) Schum, Jr. of Louisville, KY; brother, Jon P. Schum (Ronald Lacro) of Boston, MA; brother, Alan D. (Charlene) Schum of Hamburg, NY; sister, Krista J. Schum of Louisville, KY; and life-long friends, Paul and Diane Luderman of Alden, NY. George is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, James C. Schum, Sr. and brother, Donald K. Schum. George was born and raised in Alden, NY. He worked within the Hospitality Industry over the past 37 years. Numerous career opportunities eventually led him and Marianne to Central Florida in 1982. George enjoyed a fabulous 20-year career with the Walt Disney World Resort most recently as Manager of Operations, Epcot Events. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held in Alden, NY at a later date. Memorial contributions in Georges name may be made to: Hospice of the Comforter; 480 W. Central Parkway, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714. We will all miss Georges beautiful, infectious smile, quick wit, sense of humor and his loving, generous spirit. George never met a stranger who didnt soon become a friend.

George was more than a friend to everyone he met but a mentor and example of integrity. He showed many of us who followed in his footsteps to pursue your career dreams but not forget to enjoy the time you have with your family. He has been a point of reference many times in Chris and my life. In work there were many times I would ask WWGD - What would George do and in life we have always hoped to have the friendship in marriage that Maryanne and George always displayed. To say that his larger than life smile and sense of humor will be missed does not do justice to either. Maryanne will always have a family in everyone who knows her and remembers George. I told George once that I Thank you for my life and I still feel that way. Without George Chris and I would not have met. We have spent many hours of the last week looking at photos and remembering our George stories. Seems like someone who enjoyed a good story like George would want it that way.
