I too was a former student of Herr Fies.
I was class of '74 and had Herr Fies for two years, 1972-1973. I also had kept in touch with him over the past several years. Herr Fies came to my mothers wake in '98. The last time I saw Herr Fies was at Erie Basin Marina for lunch the summer of '06.
I was in Germany on Sept. 30, the day of his passing.
I am sorry I did not have the chance to see him one last time.
He was a good teacher, a good friend, and a good human being.
May God bless him.

Although I was not one of his students at Amherst High School from 1966 through 1968, I knew him to be a very good kind person who loved what he did in life. Simply, he loved people. A few years ago I joined the Central Park Mens Club and got to know Herr Fies all over again. Although I had not seen him for almost forty years, he was still the same kind and gentle person that I will never forget.

Herr Fies was a truely kind man and a wonderful and gentle teacher of both German and humanity. His kind words were many and I cannot remember him ever being cross with a student - he led by example. He'll be missed.

Herr Fies not only taught us German: he taught us to believe in kindness and goodness – and all that is just and right in this world. While bringing us Apfel Kuchen and Fastnachts from Locke’s Bakery, he taught us to approach life with such enthusiasm. How lucky we all were to be in his class. He not only taught “der, die, und das,” but he taught us how to live.
He will be missed now and always.

Herr Fies was a wonderful teacher and I will miss him. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I will always remember him for his great energy, his zeal for teaching us at Amherst High, and for his great enthusiasm for the little events in life. My favorite moment: Every year on the day of the first snowfall, he would open the windows, turn off the lights and let us take in and fully experience the first snowflakes of the season! Looking back on it, it makes me wish I could be in his class one last time for that moment. Take care, auch wiedersehn!

I, too, was a former student of Herr Fies. I had kept in touch with him over the past several years.
In fact I had spoken to him only a few weeks ago and had planned to have him visit our home again soon. He surprised me when he told me of his illness, and I am shocked that he passed so quickly. I am sorry I did not have the chance to see him one last time.
He was a good teacher, a good friend, and a fine human being. We will all be the poorer for his passing. May God bless him and have mercy on his soul.

It is with sadness and joy I sign this guest book. I was a student of Herr Fies in the mid-60's. He created great energy in his classroom. I have so many great memories of the jokes and laughter we shared.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
Herr Fies was my German teacher for three years. He was very kind, understanding, and patient with his students. Learning German was fun with Herr Fies as my teacher. God bless him.
