He then joined the United States Air Force, serving for over 24 years. During his military career he worked on the US Space Program while stationed at Cape Kennedy from 1967 to 1973. His last assignment was at Langley AFB located in Hampton Roads, VA. He then went to work for Sierra Research located in Buffalo, NY. With fond memories of the Historic Triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown in Southern Virginia, he returned to VA in 1993, settling in Gloucester. Richard is best remembered for being "Santa" to all the little ones in Williamsville, NY and at the Gloucester Moose. He was a "Master Woodworker" and enjoyed making toys and gifts for his many friends and family. Scarlett of Cheektowaga, NY, daughter, Carrie R. Dusch of Gloucester, and son, Alan E. Rathbun and his wife Norma of Greensboro, NC. The joys of his life are his surviving two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his godson and nephew, John Rust and sister-in-law, Laurie Rust, of Charlotte, NC. In 2003, he remarried his high school sweetheart, Sue Coffman of Arlington, VA. They were active in the Gloucester Genealogy and Historic Societies. Together, they traveled around Southern Virginia, photographing and putting together Travel Logs for their friends who were shut-ins or had moved out of the state. Dearest Richard, Roseanne & Susie: As September 5th, 2023 arrives, I am reminded of all the treasured moments that were spent with all of you, both in work and retirement. 16 years has flown by and now at 83, my greatest hope will be to see each of you again when my time comes. I don't think that either of you would like to see where our "Beautiful America" has gone however, having "Great Hope", I believe that all good will return before I see you all again... God is always with us so Rest in Peace my beloved Friends...

Dear Susie,
Richard became a dear friend of our family after my folks retired to Middlesex County VA in 1996. My dad found a special friend in him. They both had an enjoyment in creating & making things in their shops, eating at fine restaurants & bargain shopping for the materials to make their designs.
We will miss our "personal" Santa, yet I have comfort in knowing that those two are scheming some kind of plan to benefit everyone they encounter in heaven.
We love you, too. Plan for your future & rejoice in all the joy he brought to your life. Terry & Larry

To Susie and all of Richard's Family I want to express my deepest sympathy. I went to school with Richard for many years and only in the last ten years did I really get to know him and I feel truly blessed to have shared a friendship with such a rare and beautiful guy. He will be sorely missed, a light in the world.

From a classmate at Washington-Lee High School. You and I spent half of our high school days in auto mechanics with Mr. Elsea. We labored together many hours trying to give life to our friends old clunkers. What a great memory. My thoughts are with your family at this sad time. Good by old friend.

Even know I didn't have the opportunity to really get to know Richard, I do know that he was great with my grandchildren as well as all the children through out the Moose Lodge. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

The first time I meet Santa Claus I had just moved here with my kids and when I placed them on Santa's lap they cried forever. After a couple of times they got use to the idea of what he was doing and then I couldn't get my boys off is lap. Infact there after every person they saw they would alway run up to and say "Hello Santa" but they didn't alway get the same response that Richard gave to them. He touch many children through out the Moose Lodge and he was very dear to everyone he meet. It was my pleasure to have know such a great man. My best wishes to you and your family. Much Love..

Seeing Dick’s picture in the paper instead of on a Christmas card was a very sad experience. My Christmas was never complete until I had Dick’s Santa picture on my mantel at home. Now not only will my Christmas be empty but also each and every time I think that I won’t be able to see this wonderful man again. Luckily that void will be more than full since I can hold onto the memories of time spent with him and his family. Just thinking of Richard puts a smile on my face recollecting just some of those treasured times and knowing that I was blessed to have known this wonderful person.

I know that time is always too short for all of us, but having the memories of those dear to us to hold onto, can somewhat ease that pain.

My prayers and sympathy are with Dick’s dear family at this sorrowful time of loss.

Susie, David, Carrie, Alan and all the family,
To say I was taken by surprise with Dick's sudden passing would be an understatment, yet it cannot remotely resemble how you must feel. Dick, you and all the family are in my prayers. I could not have known a more loyal, supportive and loving friend than Dick and I am forever grateful that he was part of my life. His love will remain forever in the hearts of his family and friends.

Having walked in the footsteps of this “Gentle Giant” leaves within each of us “An Enormous Sense of Loss”. Yet, we are also reminded of “Warm and Loving Memories” to take with us for a Lifetime!!!

To have worked with Richard (Dick) was indeed a Privilege, but to have known him as a Friend created a most delightful experience in Education, Humor, Skill, Sharing and the creation of a very Special Bond, He was indeed "A Masterful Presence" that will long be "Remembered"!!!

Our deepest condolences to the “Very Special Family” that Richard leaves behind sharing in those very “Special Memories” and are remembered in our "Thoughts and Prayers"!!!

DEAR SUSIE,DAVID,CARRIE,RON, ALAN &NORMA AND ALL THE FAMILY,

BILL AND I WILL MISS THE "REAL" SANTA CLAUS VERY MUCH. THERE ARE SO MANY WONDERFUL FUN MEMORIES WHICH WE WILL KEEP IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER. I MET RICHARD WHEN HE CAME INTO THE LIFE OF MY DEAR FRIEND AND COUSIN IN LAW, ROSANNE. TOGETHER THEY HAD MANY WONDERFUL YEARS. HE HAD A SPECIAL TWINKLE IN HIS EYES FOR EVERY ONE. HIS SENSE OF HUMOR WAS INFECTIOUS. I LOVED HIS CARE AND LOVING DEVOTION TO ALL HIS FAMILY. IT WAS ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO GET HIS E-MAILS WITH THE SPARKLING SANTA. WHENEVER I SAW THEM I KNEW I WAS IN FOR A TREAT. THE TRAVELOGUES WERE OUTSTANDING! WE WERE VERY HAPPY WHEN SUSIE CAME BACK INTO HIS LIFE, TO ENJOY THEIR LIVES TOGETHER!
LOVE,
BILL & MARILYN ALFRETS AND FAMILY

This giant of a man, whose heart was large enough to hold all - both the young and the old, that he met, will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with each and everyone of you. Richard was a very special person and I was blessed to have known him. I will miss him very much and will miss all the emails that he always sent to me. I will remember the times Mark and I spent down in VA and working in the wood shop and all the side trips that we did while down visiting. I only wish I could come down to say a final farewell but work and other obligations just won't allow it. Please know that I will be thinking about all of you and please keep in touch. I will be looking for Santa to cross the skies on Christmas Eve.....Love to you all.....Lisa Marie Gee

I deeply regret the loss of a fun e-mail pal. I, too, graduated from W&L, Class of 53, but never really knew Dick in school, tho I did know who he was. It was such fun sharing e-mail with Dick for several years, and I will miss his fun a lot. My thoughts and prayers are for Susie and Dick's family. He will be missed so much.

I will never forget our first introduction to each other. You were sitting at one of the tables in the Moose Lodge eating super. Then you invited us out to your home what a warm and wonderful place along with your shop and all the things you made. What a gift you had to bring to the people you knew and then there are the children you impressed being Santa Claus for us at the Moose. The children loved the things you made for them. All of us women sitting on your lap and enjoying your company. You will be sorley missed. I send all my love to your family and will keep them in my thoughts and prayers always. Love Marilyn and Odie Hooper
