Happy Birthday, Mary. You're in our hearts and thoughts everyday. We miss you! Isabella and Michael sent up balloons for you on your birthday. You can share them with the angels if you like. I know God and the sweet angels are taking good care of you in heaven. I know now you are singing and dancing while watching over us. Michael and Isabella have two new siblings: Gabriella and Matthew. Gabriella's middle name is Elizabeth just like you. I can only hope she is as brave and strong as you were. Life without you is not the same. You taught us a lot in your short life. Thank you for being such an amazing child and for being so inspirational. Please watch over your cousins - Matthew, Michael, Gabriella and especially Isabella. We love you!

Jayson,
I am so, so sorry to hear about your loss. I want you to know how incredibly special you are to me. Last April-the 14th-we came into the ER at Children's Hospital with Owen having complaints of vomiting and neck pain. We were there for about 12 hours, and you ran an array of tests on him. After performing a spinal tap on him and analyzing the chemistry of it, you discovered that the glucose level of his cerebral spinal fluid was low, demonstrating a possible decrease in the circulation of his CSF. With that information, you sent Owen for a CT scan, where a brain tumor was found. He was diagnosed with medulloblastoma. Owen had surgery to remove the tumor in his brain April 19----hopefully the worst day of my life. An MRI prior to surgery showed two large inoperable tumors in his spinal cord in addition to the one in his brain. The past year has obviously been filled with many hellish times. He lost his ability to walk post-surgery and had severe hemiparesis on his right side. Owen received 37 radiation treatments to his brain and spine-the absolute maximum a body can tolerate. He has been through monthly chemo treatments and several infections--throughout everything he has remained pretty jovial. His ability to smile through what he has been through is inspiring to say the least. His father and I divorced last year, so there has been the adjustments that come along with that. The lives of his two older brothers have been basically put on pause, as we have been in the hospital for over 100 days this past year...
BUT---Owen was finished with chemo as of December. He has regained much of the strength on his right side, and has begun crawling and doing some standing with assistance. He still has his broviac in and receives nutrition through it nightly, but as he regains his appetite, we are hoping that will be removed soon. His most recent MRI shows him being clear---even the spots in his spine. I am hesitant to celebrate too much-as you know, cancer cells may remain in his body but not be showing up yet and his chance of recurrence is very high at which point I have been told that any kind of treatment would be palliative and not curative. But I have to focus on the positives and keep a positive outlook. I certainly have many "down" days, but I try to stay strong in front of the kids. I think that's important for them...
I completely believe it was your vigilance, thoroughness and caring that led to Owen's diagnosis. I don't feel that many other doctors would have taken the time and effort into something as "simple" as neck pain and vomiting and let us go home. I see you as Owen's guardian angel. I believe that you were Owen's doctor that day in the ER for a reason. I thank you every single day. I wanted to let you know how much you mean to me. I have asked for you every time we have come in to the hospital through the ER the past year, but we have never managed to come in while you were working. I believe that you took you time with him because of your daughter, Mary. I had brought Owen into the ER with a fever of 105 in September, and as usual, I asked for you. It was the day that you lost your sweet angel, and you would not believe how I sobbed for her, for you, for you family. There is absolutely no sense that can be made of it when a parent loses a child, and I am so, so, so very sorry for your loss.
I can't think of a way to thank you properly. I just really wanted you to know how truly special you are, and how I will ALWAYS view YOU as the one who "saved" Owen. We certainly are not out of the woods, but I can't imagine how things would have turned out for him if Owen's diagnosis been delayed even for one month longer. Thank you so much-I wish I could find words to truly express the extent of my gratitude, but "thank you" will have to do...
yours,
Jen Pieber

Dear Jayson and Jenifer,
Not a day goes by when we don't think of you and Mary. She gave you such genuine love, love that will never leave you. And you gave her such a wonderful home and family to share her days. Mary's smile and courage will never be forgotten. She is with you still, just in a new way. Embrace her love always. We know this healing will be hard. Remember you are never alone - our hearts are always with you.
Love,

Dear Sweet Mary, It’s only been a short time since you left us but yet it feels like forever. I look at your pictures and your beautiful little face and regret not having spent more time with you. You are and were a sweet angel. Nothing can fill the void that your passing has left in all of our lives, but you will always be with us. Jen and Jay, I love you both so much and I am so sorry for everything you’ve been through. I promise to always keep Mary’s memory alive. Jen, you are the best mother, sister, and friend I know. I love you and admire you and I am blessed to have you and your family in my life. Stay strong and know that I am here for you always. Love, Kim

I met Jayson in the ER at Children's a couple years ago when my son, Gabriel was there. He told me about Mary. He was as proud of her as any father could be, and filled with so many hopes and dreams. I am deeply saddened by the news of her passing and can only imagine your grief. Take comfort in knowing she is now in the arms of Jesus and is completely healed. All God's children, especially our 'special' little ones are saved by His loving and merciful Grace. You are all in my prayers.

I know it’s been years since we not only saw each other, but spoke. When I talked to your Mom the other day on business (yes, I still work for the same law firm) she told me what happened. Needless to say, you have been on my mind ever since. I just viewed the photo album, and my heart is breaking for you. I have two children and absolutely couldn’t imagine losing one of them. I know it’s been a good 15 years since we saw each other, but I felt compelled to write to you. I was very sick myself a few years ago (ask your Mom) and I would in a heartbeat go through what I went through again rather than seeing one of my kids suffer. My heart goes out to you and your family. You have a beautiful family! Stay strong for them and know your little girl is now in peace in a wonderful place.
