Just like the 1st reading today my mother, Nellie Luciow Clark, we muse that her given name was really Natasha, was a valiant woman. A first generation American, she left the familiar surroundings of her parent’s farm home to seek a new life in the vibrant city of Buffalo, where she met my father. They raised 4 children until his untimely passing in 1961. It was then that the vibrant woman took total control. She was a skilled homemaker who could cook, can, sew, knit, maintain a vegetable garden and save for necessities. Five of us living on social security and she was the only one aware that we were poor. We had a busy house and she had a way of befriending many a neighborhood child, and some other “characters” you might find in our kitchen at all hours of the day. As a youngster you never knew where she would be sending you off to, to deliver a meal, fresh bread, pies or cookies she had made, and that continued into our adulthood. Our big kitchen and its table on many an evening was full with folks, sometimes relatives, drinking hot tea and having their tea leaves read by Mom. She was the first of her siblings to finish school and graduate from high school in Cattaraugus and she spoke her parents’ language, Ukrainian. She had foresight and in the late 60’s enrolled my sister Madonna into a new technology school for ‘key punch operators’ for these new machines called Computers. She respected talent, enjoyed music, art, and literature. She had the insight to sign her two of her daughters, Barbara & Sally, up for a new dance introduced by a local Irish immigrant in the neighborhood and taught in a basement on Norman Street, called Irish Step-dancing, boy did that catch on. She had the kindness to be my Cub Scout pack’s den mother, right here in the basement of the Parish center. She was the first person we knew that was into recycling things and had a room full of cool whip containers, plastic lids, L’eggs egg containers, and egg cartons should any school or group decide to do a craft project. She was dedicated to her children and then our children. Her grandchildren spent many a day and night at Nana’s; baking, playing board games, making crafts or playing the piano, taking walks to Caz Park or up Seneca Street to Nana’s favorite stores. She even brought them here to St. Teresa’s for 5:30 PM Mass on Sundays. Her other devotion was serving the religious community here at St. Teresa’s. Between the convent and the rectory she cooked and house kept for 30 years. When I was in grammar school there were over twenty nuns at the convent , she prepared their main meal at lunch time. Whatever the good sisters had at lunch, we at home had for dinner. I was in my early 20’s before I discovered that a fish fry was supposed to be crispy on the outside! Nellie loved the Sisters of Mercy and stayed in touch with many throughout the years. She enjoyed working with the priests, many a visiting one, at the rectory but took advantage of Msgr. Basil Orsmby’s retirement and did the same. She would be embarrassed by this eulogy and humbled by your presence. Nellie was a valiant woman and we are thankful for the 88 years the Lord has shared her with us.

Nellie Clark served as the housekeeper at St. Teresa's Convent for 23 years. She later became the housekeeper at St. Teresa's Rectory for an additional 7 years. While her cooking was superb, it was only topped by her genuine kindness.
In all the time that she served St. Teresa's, Nellie did much more than simply keep house. She became a dear friend to the priests and sisters, a trusted confidant and a wonderful presence to the good people of the parish.
A kind hearted woman, she always went out of her way to help others. In many ways, she held things together and kept things organized. Always going beyond the call of duty, her day began early in the morning and often did not end until 8 o'clock in the evening.
Nellie was a favorite among guests, particularly at the rectory. She was always certain to fix things, "just so," so that each and every person felt comfortable and welcomed. She was in many ways the heart of the place and made it feel like home to so many.
A particular favorite of Monsignor Basil Ormsby, he is certain to be one of the first to greet her as she goes home to God.
As we offer our sympathies to her family at their loss, it is with confidence that we commend Nellie to God. May she rest now in eternal peace and may His perpetual light shine upon her.
