Dear Michael, Roy, Melba, Scott and Sean, family and friends:
I just learned today of this horrific tragedy. Mark and Shelly will be missed terribly. Shelly and Mark always opened their door to me and our family. I am so glad I saw them last year at our family reunion in Houston. They were both caring and special individuals. Please let us know if we do anything to help you during this difficult time.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Gordon, and Rita,
Mark and Shelly were amazing friends to me and my husband through my brother and sister-in-law, Mark Balloff and Judith Balloff Gelpey. As a part of the extended "Rudy's Raider's" family, we had the pleasure of knowing them and sharing many family milestones for the last 35 years! They traveled to Tennessee and Florida to join us for a multitude of our family's milestone events. We loved them as siblings, and we are so saddened by their untimely deaths. Please know we share this difficult time with you & Michael.

We are thinking of you all... I went on Man and His Land Expeditions with Mark. I was about 13 and he was about 14. He was good at EVERYTHING! He was the best mountain climber and backpacker, and the best friend. He always found a way to encourage those of us who were not blessed with his physical attributes and ability...in other words me and perhaps less so --almost everyone else...
We met Shelley when we were in law school with Mark and later at Parker with Michael. Shelley always had a smile and a twinkle in her eye... a great sense of humor and was a genuine and interested friend...Both were devoted parents and were so proud of Michael and his accomplishments...Their special friendship lasted for a lifetime and we will always keep that with us. We send our love to all of Mark and Shelley's family and friends.

I did not know them well. They were, however, guests at every family celebration of my sister and brother-in-law,Tom and Robin Ringel. I know how much Mark and Shelley meant to them, so I know how special they must have been. They take a piece of you with them when they go, but they leave a bit of themselves behind. That is why it hurts, but there is still room for comfort. My heartfelt condolences to you all.

My heart is heavy with sorrow for you and your family with the sadness of our tragic loss. Mark and Shelley were such good friends and such good neighbors while I lived in Chicago. And Michael, was only a small tike, now grown into a man. When I was introduced to Mark and Shelley by Bob Williamson the first time I thought, “now there is a great couple, a great family”…and I wasn’t wrong! God speed! My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

George and Betty & Michael:
I had the pleasure of getting to know Mark and Shelley initially through Andrea & Bob Williamson, and we stayed in touch often in the years since we lost Andrea and then Bob. I cannot express to you the void that this tragedy and loss leaves in my heart. They will be sorely missed. I know that words cannot soothe the sorrow and pain that you are feeling now. Perhaps we can all get some relief knowing that the 4 of them are together again in spirit. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Please accept my offer of sympathy at this unthinkable loss. I had not seen either Shelley or Mark for over twenty-five years, but I remember them with great fondness. Nearly thirty years ago, my late husband and I were friends of theirs in Los Angeles. Bill had worked with Mark. He said that Mark was incredibly smart and incredibly nice. I remember one evening that they had us over for dinner at their apartment. Mark told great stories about the eccentric behavior of his beloved dog, Heinz. Shelley cooked a fabulous dinner. I remember the entrée to this day -- a Moroccan dish, chicken breast in phyllo dough. I remember this detail because, at age twenty-three, I was stunned, and somewhat chagrined, to find that one of my contemporaries was such a sophisticated cook; but then, I got the impression that Shelley was ultra-competent at just about everything. They were rare people and will be greatly missed.

I was deeply saddened by the news of the tragedy that befell Mark and Sandy. I know that words cannot soothe the grief that you are feeling now. I was a partner at Gorden & Glickson for two years and have only fond memories of my time there and my association with Mark. He was a great lawyer and a fine man. He had true vision of the technology landscape in Chicago. May their memory bring you comfort and peace.
