Dear Frances,
As I think of Jay today, I can't help but think of you also. Your life was intertwined with so many in the magic world. You are still loved, and you are still missed. You and Jay have left a marvelous legend in the world of magic that will live on in perpetuity.
Love always,

Jay Marshall
On Saturday mornings I would go to the house of my Cub Scout leader in Chicago,
Dick Jarrow. He had a son and daughter just behind me in school. We would go
through his magic. Dick was interested in making tricks and always had a new
one in production. I meet Bud Dietrich, Tommy Edwards, etc, both socially and
as magicians. On Saturday we would go to Magic, Inc., Jay Marshall was always
there with a smile and a watchful eye over the magic shop. He loved to watch
people in his store and enjoyed the busy Saturday with salesman being challenged
by performing magician, which question the validity of a trick for the general
public. Jay Marshall had some very good demonstrators.
Jay was always interested in what was new. He had an impossible knowledge bases
but he was always interested. He was very supportive. This is Chicago in the
1960’s.
Jay Marshall loved exposing Chicago to the best magic. After a lecture at the
Hard Core group in February 1980, I meet Bill Malone. I had never seen anyone
perform magic with such easy and so much fun. No boxes, no assistant, except
for everyone in the audience, Bill Malone had what I wanted in magic. I took
lessons from Bill Malone for one month. Jay helped me learn some of the very
difficult slights Bill Malone was teaching me.
Bill Malone wanted me to go to Las Vegas to meet and learn from Michael Skinner.
I asked Jay Marshall and he was very positive. I spent two weeks with Michaels
Skinner. I auditioned for the Magic Castle only two plus months after I had
started practice magic and had meet Bill Malone. On May 23, 1980, I auditioned
at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California. I received a performing contract
for a week in the close-up room. I have performed at the Magic Castle many
times in many rooms and locations.
Jay has been in and out of my life for the last twenty years. When I went back
to live in Chicago it was like I had never left. Jay Marshall has helped me
with references through my magic and he purchased product from me including
books and videotapes. I have been with him at many conventions including FFFF.
I will miss him very much.

Dear, Dear Fran....we will so much miss you. I remember how thoughtful you were to me when I was just a small boy starting in magic. You've been my idol (along with Jasper) for these many years. I'll see you again one day soon....'up there'. Aloha

As a young man I met you at Magic Inc. It was not until a few years later I learned who you were and learned of your impact on our art. Thanks Frances.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Jay. I know that I have missed seeing Frances at Colon, and am sad that I haven't seen her for a few years. Just remember that she is with Jack, Anne, Little Johnny Jones, Karrol, Duke, Harry and all the rest of the crew. Think of the shows they are putting on now!!!!!
God Bless.

Magic Inc. was indeed a "magical" place when I visited there as a boy growing up in Chicago. Frances was always willing to help and had a kind smile for all of us magic-gawking kids. Rest assured that her memory will live on in many of our hearts.

Goodbye Fran. We shall miss you. As adults we seldom realize the effect we have on children. The memories we create with little more than a glance. While you called the most of the world's greatest magicians your personal friends, you never lost sight of the magic your smile held for so many children who wandered into your shop.

Deepest sympathy to Jay Marshall and the family on the passing of one of the greatest women the art of magic has ever known. In addition to her writing and her presence at Magic Inc., Frances Marshall was among the earliest and most vocal advocates of women in magic. Her loss will be deeply felt.
