I have a story about my Grandmother and a situation with my son. Perhaps he fell and cried. Perhaps he got too excited in the presence of company. Memory is a funny thing since I don’t remember what he did but I do recall feeling that he had lost his composure and I sternly admonished him to "tighten back up". No sooner did the last word tumble from my mouth before she stopped me with a firm voice, a glare, and the words "the days of raising boys like that are long over." I had thought that my old-school action would have elicited approval from her. It took some thought to see it for what it was. That despite being more than twice my age this woman had not closed her mind to new ideas and that she was there for children with remarkable vigilance. That memory replays frequently when I need to decide the appropriate responses to the challenges of raising a spirited young boy. Rabbi Schechter talked about the gifts we give people. Not the ones we wrap up but the one we transfer, sometimes without knowing it, to people who go on to transfer that gift to others. With a glare and a few well place words she transferred to me a temperance I did not have before that moment. She likely didn’t know the effect she had on my point of view. I hope she does now.
