To all connected to Al Johnson. I (Edward Kearns)am the brother of the late Jackie Kearns, who operated a newspaper stand on the south east corner of Damen and Roscoe. My nephew Peter Kearns left a telephone message about the passing of Al Johnson. I have always admireed Al for the kindness that he extended to Jackie, who was handicapped. My wife (Janet) and I moved out to Carol Stream, Il. in October of 1978. July of 1979 we invited the gang from the gas station, restaurant and the tavern out to our home to celebrate Jackie's 51st birhtday. They were all so good to Jackie. May Almighty God bless Al and all that were/are close to him is the sincere prayer of Ed & Janet Kearns.

Alfred F. Johnson
1991 – 2011, 20 years – One Chapter
With all due respect we wish you love and peace
as your soul now rests in heaven.
Thank you for the time you shared with us here on earth.

We, Sandra/Elena/Ivan, first met Al 20 years ago. I remember Mom, Joan, telling us about him when they first started dating. It all began with a blind date at a church social for a St. Patty's Day celebration meal. Later she would tell us about how she was dating a man who rode a “HARLEY. All of this was very different but she was happy and spoke very nicely of him. She invited him to a family function and he fit like an old glove. He was kind and easy to get to know.
As time went on and Al became part of our family we shared many good times: holidays/penny poker/gardening/meals/stories-ups & downs/love of critters, I remember the squirrel that would come up on the porch and eat out of his hand. Al and Mom took time to visit both sides of the family and enjoyed each other's company. I'll never forget how he came to my rescue when I became very ill and he took me to the hospital. He stood by Mom as she battled Breast cancer. He helped drive Elena to AZ when she first went out there for a job after college. He was a rock and we appreciated him.
He enjoyed (I'd say he loved) spending time with all of us, including our extend family in WI and many of our family friends. Al and Gene (one son of Joe Kittilson – last living sibling of my Mother's Mom), they would get up early and go have coffee and sausage together before anyone else woke up. They were on the same page as soon as they met. Both great guys! Everyone at the reunions always asked for him. Friends from Mom's job, of 35 years, at the Methodist Hospital also became a special part of his life. Al had a special way with the children in our lives, he especially treasured Christine and Rebekha. It was so cute to see him light up when they'd stop by to see him. He was a special part of both Elena's and Ivan's weddings. We loved him dearly and will miss him here on earth. We are grateful we were part of his life if only for one Chapter, Thank you Lord.
