I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. Ryan was an amazing teacher he got me threw my first 2 1/2 years of highschool with only a few wounds that have healed. I will always remember "the big guy"! My prayers are with you and your family.

During high school, I was involved in 3 things. And McKeithan taught me 2 of them. I am who I am because of who he was, and who he saw that I could become. I am forever greatful for the role he played in my life, and will miss him greatly. Once, during my junior year, we were all trying to figure out why some peole called him Al and others called him Ryan, upon being asked he would only tell us that it was a family name and we would never guess it. He was right. Now, 3 years later, he finally let us know.

I just wanted to express my condolences to the entire McKeithan family. Every year I would work with Ryan at the National Catholic Forensics League fall moderators’ meeting and spring tournament. Ryan was always creative, insightful, and there with the perfect joke when the workload got stressful. He will be missed by the crew that worked with him each year.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ryan, or Mr. Mac as I knew him, was not only my favorite teacher but also a good friend. As a student at Jefferson County North from ’79 to ’82, he served not only as a teacher but also as a coach. His skills as an educator, though formidable, were no match for his skills as a mentor and motivator. He was personable, humorous, intuitive and amicable in even the most difficult situations. I learned more about integrity and humility during our short time spent together at golf tournaments than I have from anyone since. I loved his laugh, his endless patience, his edgy repartee and his ability to make everyone and anyone feel important and needed. I honestly don’t think that I have met a finer man. I offer my deepest sympathies to you and all who knew Mr. Mac.

Ryan was a great friend and mentor as he worked hard to become a better broadcast teacher. He came to visit me in Overland Park and cared so much about what he was doing as a career. It's obvious from the other entries here that he will be deeply missed. We in the Student Television Network broadcast group will miss him also.

I am saddened to hear of the lost of Ryan McKeithan. I met him through STN (Student Television Network), a network set up for scholastic broadcasting in schools. In the time I interacted with him through campSTN and the national convention, I gained valuable insight to our jobs as broadcast teachers in the high school setting. I was impressed to hear all the things he has accomplished both professionaly and personaly. His experience will be missed.

I was so shocked to hear about his passing. I spent MANY hours with McKeithan. He was my favorite teacher, coach and friend for the 4 years I spent on the Debate and Forensics team. McKeithan had a way of making you forget that you had a first name! He loved to push you to your potential, and helped you any time you fell. We loved you McKeithan and our thoughts and prayers are with your family. God Bless.

Mr. McKeithan was a huge influence in my life, and judging from the crowd at the memorial service and the entries in this guest book, it's fair to say he did so in a lot of other students'. I debated on his teams from 1984 to 1987. His contributions to my life, and to others, are immeasurable. RIP.

Mr. McKeithan was one of only a handful of teachers that truly made a difference in my life. He was a great motivator and always listened. As a debate coach he would never let you quit even if you'd had the worse day in the world, he made you get after it again. As a teacher and mentor he truly cared about and respected his students. I was in his first class he taught at Seaman, his impact will be forever remembered. He was one of the best and for that he will always hold a place in my heart. He passed on too young. Mr. McKeithan you were AWESOME!!

I was so sad to hear about Mr. McKeithan. He was a favorite teacher when I was a student at Seaman High School from 1983 - 1985. As a sophomore, Mr. McKeithan was my very first coach for Debate and Forensics, and my fondest memories are riding in the huge station wagon with a bunch of friends, on the way to a tournament. As soon as we started with any inappropriate words or remarks, Mr. McKeithan would yell from the driver's seat, "My ears are burning; you guys are hurting my ears." Ten years later, I would say those same words to the kids that I coached on my own forensics team. In the year 2000, I would get to meet Mr. McKeithan again, this time as an adult and a substitute-teacher at Seaman. When I introduced myself that first day as a sub, and as an adult, Mr. McKeithan said to me, "I love to meet my old students again and find out that they turned into normal people." Mr. McKeithan, you were a great teacher and a great person. You will be deeply missed by all who knew you.

Lucia, Ryan and Maggie: I hope you can take some comfort from knowing how many students Mr. Mac influenced forever. I can account for a couple hundred from the 1977-78 school year alone. Over three decades that adds up to ... a life very well spent. I knew him as a teacher, basketball coach, speech coach and golf partner. He's behind many of my best memories and strongest convictions, and I can see here that there are many like me. We mourn with you.

Mr. McKeithan has had an impact on a majority of our debaters here at KSU. While, not alot of us went to school here, he did judge us in the district. In the round and out, he was a smart, understanding, caring individual but, above all that, he was a friend to every debater in this region and wanted us all to sucessed. He will be missed in the debate community but, he will never leave us. The kind of person that he was will live on inside all of us. Thanks, KSU Debate

Although I was always interested in the world of debate, I never had Mr. McKeithan as a teacher. Last semester I did have the chance to interview him for Clipper. He talked about his new "Drive to Save Lives" program, in which he seemed so passionate about helping others. In the 10-15 minutes I spoke with him, I knew he was a kind and sincere man. I am so thankful that I was able to sit down with him that day and talk with him, even for just a little while. My thoughts and prayers go out to the McKeithan family.

Mr. McKeithan was an insperation to all, but to me he was a mentor and a friend. He was my debate/forensics coach from 1998 to 2002 and always had a joke or a smile ready for you. If you were down he knew if you needed encouragment, or you needed to be taught about the ways of the world.
This man is to me a legend that should never be forgotten. He was a good, honest, and powerful man who helped more then his fair share of people. He will forever be missed, and he will forever be remembered.

I was devastated to hear the news of the loss of the most influential teacher I've known, Mr. Ryan McKeithan. Even today, 18 years after graduating, I look at the time I spent under his guidance as the most productive and effective of my life. He showed me more ways of thinking progressively, working efficiently and speaking precisiely than any other person. I admired his calm and logical manner constantly and look back on the time with him as unparalleled. The fact that this heartbreaking news can reach me half way across the country is a testament to the power this outstanding man had on the formative years of my life. The world will never be the same without him and needs more men like him.

I am so saddened to hear of Al's death. I love music and theater because of the his insight and great teaching. To this day, I can see the look of puzzlement on his face when I would pronounce Bob Dylan's name wrong! I can't think of many educators who would spend the summer directing plays with former students just for the fun of it. He made each of us feel as if we were his very favorite student! And to me, he was my very favorite educator.

I am so sorry to hear about Ryan's passing. He was a wonderful man, as well as a great (and gentle) teacher. I had the good fortune of getting to work with him on two summer stock productions ("Pippin" and "Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum") back in the early 80s - they have always been some of my most treasured memories! He brought immeasurable joy and passion to his work, and students couldn't help but be swept away along with him. It is the true mark of an amazing teacher and human being that students many decades later are still touched by his life and his dedication to his craft. Very seldom to you get the opportunity to spend so much time with one of your teachers and 20 years later, my friends and I still speak very fondly of him. I am, as my family, forever grateful knowing him and learning from him as I did.

Mr. McKeithan was my debate and forensics coach for the four years of my high school career. He sharpened my critical thinking skills, made me a better communicator (though I could have stood to listen to his lessons more often), and gave a lot of good students a classroom to call home. I was saddened to learn of Mr. McKeithan's passing. He was a great debate/forensics coach and will be greatly missed. I graduated from Seaman in 1987 but would occasionally see him at debate tournaments when I was asked to judge. My condolences.

Lucia, I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Mac. He was absolutely one of the greatest teachers I ever had. JCN was a much better place for having him there. We all loved him.

When I stop to think about what Al's contribution has been to Speech Activities in Kansas and the nation, it is mind-numbing. A day will not pass in our profession that we won't be doing something that Al had a major role in organizing. I hope we can do justice to the legacy that he has left us all. I will surely miss the stories that made me laugh. With deepest sympathy, Mark and Melanie Ralston
