I still have a small photo of Don Amidei on my bulletin board. I remember him telling me that he owned my body and my soul. then he qualified it, along the lines of, "Well, I own your body. I'll lave your soul to God." I will never forget him.

Red Amidei was a college friend of my parents and was my godfather. He was intimidating to a little boy, but my ancient memories of him seen through the lens of an older man show me that he was a kind and funny man and a good partner to Therese.

I was lucky to have Coach Amidei for two classes at St George, 1955 and 1956. What a man. He instilled in me a love of History and to strive to be all one could be. His classes were a joy to be in. When people ask what is the name of a teacher you had that you remember most, it was the Coach. IM just found out of his passing and to his family, I also feel your loss. I took his teaching into the world with me.

Don Amidei was my coach, teacher and mentor while I was attending St. George HS. I am blessed that he could be a part of my life. He has always been on mind over the years and his validation of me will remain forever.

I think the great Australian runner Herb Elliott said, “Speed is a gift. Endurance is an achievement.” Don Amidei taught endurance. But even though we may have wonderful memories of years past, what happened on the cross country course or on the track was of relatively short duration. I have come to understand that Coach Amidei gave us not only physical endurance but endurance in life. That is a wonderful gift, and I continue to put it into practice. I will always be grateful to him. May he rest in peace.

To The family of Coach Amidei:
I feel so fortunate that I had the chance to be coached by Coach Amidei. Seldom do you meet someone in life that exudes their purpose for being. It was immediate with Coach Amidei. From the first day of practice at DePaul University in the Fall of 1967, it was obvious that I was in the firm grip of someone who had worked hard in life and was going to demand the same of me. That work ethic made me the person I am today. He is top shelf whether in this life or afterlife. His children and other family members are so blessed to have had such a caring and giving person as a member of their family.

To the family of Coach Don Amidei please accept my deepest sympathies. I knew coach as a student at St. George H.S. (1956-1960). In the spring of 1964, he served as my supervising teacher while I completed my student teaching experience and served as my department chairman when we taught history together at St. George H.S. (1964-1967). My early success as an educator I owe to him. Don will always be in my memories and my prayers. Thank you Coach!

Coach Amidei was a great man. He was always cordial and friendly, even when I was a young college kid at another school, and he was a prominient coach. I had many conversations with him over the years, ranging from track (as one would expect) to physics. He will be greatly missed in the track and field community.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Coach "A" and his family. His imprint has been felt by many of us, his former athletes, but by so many outside of athletics as well. While time and distance separates many of us - the lessons Coach imparted connect us.
God Bless,

“I know that my Redeemer lives,
And at last will stand upon the earth;
And after my body has wasted away,
Then without flesh I shall see God,
Whom I shall see for myself,
And my eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger.”

Coach A had a tremendous influence on my life as a runner and as a man. I was saddened to hear just today of his passing. But I am proud to have received his lessons in competition that I use to this day to stay ahead in life and raise my future champions.
