Maxine Bayly Obituary

GLOUCESTER POINT - Mrs. Maxine M. Bayly, 64, a resident of Belle Haven, Va., on the Eastern Shore, formerly of Gloucester Point, Va., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at home with her husband of 38 years.
Maxine's sharp intelligence and passion for learning led her to a successful career as an academic, scientist and teacher. Maxine held advanced degrees in Biology and Education. She held a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Alabama and a Master's Degree from Wake Forest University. While working on her Master's Degree, she traveled to The Galapagos Islands and other off-shore scientific expeditions where she had the privilege of discovering five new species of aquatic life. A beloved and respected high school teacher, Maxine dedicated 30 years of her life to teaching young minds biology and chemistry in both the Gloucester and York County school systems.
Maxine's positive outlook, generous spirit and kind-hearted nature touched many in her community. Maxine was a devoted and active member of Bethany United Methodist Church where she enjoyed leadership roles such a Worship Chairman, singing in the choir, and volunteering with outreach ministries where she traveled to Alaska, West Virginia and Franklin, Va. A talented artisan, Maxine loved crafting, sewing, shopping with the girls, playing cards, boating with her husband and traveling to visit her grandchildren. She constantly channeled her energetic spirit into improving and uplifting the people, projects and places around her. She possessed an enormous, inspiring love for her family and friends – a love we will cherish in our hearts forever. We lovingly remember her as a tireless-giver, patient teacher, and most of all, a loving mother and grandmother who devoted so much of her time, energy and love to her family.
She was born in 1944 in Reform, Ala. She was preceded in death by her father, Elmo McGinty of Reform, Ala., and adoptive father, James R. Miles of Mathews, Va.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Joseph Allen Bayly of Belle Haven, Va.; a son, Duane Allen Bayly and wife, Julie, of Gloucester, Va.; a daughter, Brittan Bayly Goetz and husband, Mark, of Brooklyn, Conn.; and four adoring grandchildren. She is also survived by her mother, Dr. Catherine Miles, and sister, Dr. Jan Pipkin, both of Tampa, Fla.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Hogg Funeral Home, 3098 George Washington Memorial Highway, Gloucester Point, VA 23062. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, Va., officiated by the Rev. Jim Ward and the Rev. Braxton Allport. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug 21, at the Belle Haven Cemetery, Belle Haven, Va., on the Eastern Shore, officiated by the Rev. Tammy Estep.

Dear Joe, Duane and Britton:
So sorry to hear of Maxine passing. I worked at Kiddie Care years ago and knew all of you from there. During the years before your move to Eastern Shore I would see Maxine shopping at Farm Fesh where I work now. She seemed so excited about the move. She even invited me to come for a visit sometime but never made it and of course with your moving I no longer seen her and was out of touch. She was a wonderful sweet lady and so proud of her family. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Eileen Williams Harlow

To the family of Mrs. Bayly,
I was very sad to read of Mrs. Bayly's passing. I am now 43 years old but will never forget Mrs. Bayly - my favorite biology teacher at Gloucester Intermediate School. Even in the years after I graduated whenever I saw Mrs. Bayly she always greeted me with a smile, a hug, and encouraging words. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time.
