Ralph Price Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Ralph Edward Price, born 1924 in Joplin, Mo., died Aug. 13, 2008. He grew up in Humansville, Mo., and was the only child of Herman and Blanch Price.
After graduating high school, he went to fight the war in the European theatre as a P-47 "Hell Hawks" bomber pilot. He returned home and graduated from Kansas University as an Aeronautical Engineer. He worked at Cessna in Wichita, Kan., as a test pilot and then moved to Newport News, Va., and worked for the U.S. Government at AVLABs, Ft. Eustis, Va., as an engineer. He retired early because of his heart and traveled the U.S. with wife, finally settling down in Phoenix, Ariz. Several words described him best: intelligent, witty, sarcastic, spoiled rotten, funny, stubborn, jazz lover, and, of course, a hero in every sense of the word. He will be truly missed.
Ralph is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Joanne, and is survived by three daughters, Patty and Skip Hughes, Debbie Pinson, Dee and Mike Trotter; and his grandchildren and spouses, Shannon and David Steinbach, Casey and Travis Bynum, Gretchen and Mike Bauman, and Michelle and Chris Trotter; and his great-grandchildren, Luke and Emily Bynum, Trevor Steinbach, Brandon Bauman. Patty, Debbie and DeeDee, I'm sorry that I missed seeing Ralph at the Rehab center. I went to his room after seeing you, Patty and he was in the hospital for a procedure.
I always thought so much of your Mom and Dad and of course you girls too. It doesn't seem possible so many years have passed since all of you grew up and your folks moved to Arizona. I'm sorry we lost touch along the way. They were wonderful people - good neighbors and good friends. My love to all of you.

Patty, Debbie & Dee Dee, I am so sorry that you have lost your dad. I am also sorry to find out that you lost your mother. I always liked them when I was growing up and always envied your mother's great tan every year. Be happy that they are once again united in the love they shared for so many years.

The loss of a true hero and friend. His actions as a fighter/bomber pilot during World War II, in bringing down four German ME-109's even though his main mission was finding and destroying the enemy on the ground, made him an ACE in my mind. He continued the role as an ACE during his many years as a test pilot and Aeronautical Engineer. He truly loved his wife Joanne and deeply missed her after her passing. His remaining world revolved around his three wonderful daughters who cared for him through the end. "Ralphie Babie" will be truly missed.
