Mary Carawan Obituary

POQUOSON - Mary Estelle Carawan, 95, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Sentara CarePlex after a brief illness.
Born in Pitt County, N.C., Estelle moved along with her husband, Vernon, to the Peninsula in 1958. She was a member of Calvary Assembly of God.
Estelle was a homemaker and took great pride in raising her family. She enjoyed gardening, sewing her daughters' clothes and taking many fun filled road trips with her husband Vernon. Later in life, she and Vernon loved to tend their garden and share the fruits of their labor with family and friends.
Estelle was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years in 2005, Clyde Vernon Carawan; her daughter, Mary Alice Smith; and son, Clyde Marion Carawan.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving daughters, Betty S. Hill and her husband, Robert, of Newport News and Patricia R. Finch and her husband, Bud, of Poquoson; and her very special grandchildren, Paige Masters and her husband, Al, Justin Finch and Nathan Finch; and one great-granddaughter, Anne Paige Masters.
A service to celebrate Estelle's life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Finch officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Friends are invited to visit www.mem.com, through this site you are encouraged to share your thoughts and fond memories with Estelle's family.

Estelle, Vernon, Marion & Pat were my 2nd family when I was growing up. Pat & I were BFF's for many years. I'll never forget how they took me with them camping to Nagshead and other places.

Estelle allowed us as children to use our imaginations. We would play soda shop in the bathroom with soap suds and make quite a mess.
We use to have haunted houses in the pantry and made tents outside. She also made the best chicken n dumplings and blueberry cobbler!

Estelle always opened her heart and home to others.
I will never forget those days and feel very special that I was allowed to be a part of their family.
