Welford Wilson Obituary

GLOUCESTER - Welford Roane Wilson, 97, died at his home on Friday, Aug. 29, 2008.
He was born in Cash, Va., and retired in 1976 from Virginia Dept. of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church, the Men's Bible Class, United Methodist Men, and the treasurer of the building fund of the church. Welford was the oldest member of Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue, the Redman Council, and the Piankatank Community League. He was a graduate of New Upton School.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Elizabeth Wilson; his parents, Ethelbert and Mamie Roane Wilson; his sisters, Alice Hogge, Elsie Boyd, and Elosie Fary.
He is survived by his daughter, Donna Jean Wilson; his brothers, Edwin Wilson and his wife, Vivian, of Deltaville and Earl Wilson and his wife, Gloria, of Salisbury, Md.; the Shelton Family, the Hatch Family and the Calloway Family; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, in Olive Branch United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Rita Staul. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to either the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, VA 23061; Memorial Fund of Olive Branch United Methodist Church, 11303 Harcum Road, Gloucester, VA 23061; or to Olive Branch United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 121, Ark, VA 23003.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Rachel Morgan, Bobbie Cooper, Home Health Care, and to Riverside Walter Reed Hospice for their special care of Welford.

Donna . . . Your father, Welford, was the perfect neighbor and friend for more than 40 years. As you know, he and your Mother Evelyn rented his father's house to the Zink family during '66-'67, when I was serving in Vietnam. Both of your parents routinely helped my wife, Dee, and children, Ginny and Kathy, during that time. I will always be most grateful for his many kindnesses and helpfulness during those years and for the next forty. In many ways he was the perfect neighbor. We all will miss him, and he leaves a huge hole in the community fabric. Love, the Zink's
