Dorothy Tyler Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Dorothy May Anderson Tyler, 91, passed away lovingly surrounded by family on Sept. 2, 2008.
She was a resident of Newport News, Va., and a life time resident of Poughkeepsie and Beacon, N.Y.
She was born in New Haven, Conn., on Nov. 27, 1916, and was the eldest of 10 children born to Brack Anderson Sr., and Hattie Overby Anderson, both deceased. She was educated in Poughkeepsie schools and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Poughkeepsie and also Springfield Baptist Church in Beacon, N.Y. Dorothy and husband Russell had a private catering service and she also worked at Castle Point VA Hospital for 11 years. She was an active Troop Leader in Cub Scouts of America in Beacon and a member of Les Soeurs Amiable Civic Club and other community organizations. She was a healthcare provider and always eager to donate time to friends and family. Upon relocating to Newport News, she was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Ministry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Tyler; sons, Woody Douglas Sr., Ernest R. Tyler; and daughter, Brenda Nola Tyler Pickens, who recently passed on Aug. 28, 2008; sisters, Hilda Mildred "Lover" Towler and Geraldine Johnson; brothers, Brack Anderson Jr. and Robert Anderson.
She leaves behind a daughter, Rosalind Tyler of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and a son, Joseph Tyler (Patricia) of Charlotte, N.C.; son-in-law, Edward Pickens; sisters, Nola L. Wilcox Smith, Vivian Overby Roberts, Mary Jane Anderson and Rebecca "Becky" Johnson; brother, Donald Anderson, all of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will take place along with her precious daughter, Brenda Pickens, at 1p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Trinity Baptist Church in Newport News. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 1 to 7p.m. Friday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
The family wishes to sincerely thank the church family of Trinity Baptist for its kindness, love and support during this time; and as well, O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home and Britt's Florist of Newport News. The family extends warmest thanks to the entire staff at Hospice of Charlotte, in Huntersville, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Trinity Baptist Church and Hospice of Charlotte.
