Jack Barbour Obituary

HAMPTON - Jack Giddings Barbour Sr., 83, passed away Sept. 2, 2008.
He was born March 31, 1925, to Orvid and Daisy Barbour. Jack was born and raised in the Pee Dee Point section of Elizabeth City County (Hampton) Va. He joined the Hampton Volunteer Fire Company at age 15 and was a Life Member for 68 years. Upon graduating from Hampton High School in 1942, he entered the Apprentice School at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) (later known as NASA) but left to serve in the U.S. Navy during WW II from 1944 to 1946.
Upon returning to Hampton, he completed his apprenticeship. He retired from NASA as an experimental sheet-metal technician. Much of his craft can be seen at the Hampton Science Museum. He enjoyed many hobbies such as: R/C aircraft, Ham Radio (WB4GXC) and the restoration project of the 1938 Ahrens Fox Ladder Truck HVF Co. He built four 'Home Built' T-18 two passenger aircraft in his garage from scratch. He also built an R/C lawn mower that 'momma' never let him use because of her flowers. He was always building something in his garage.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Arminda (Mindy), his daughter, Catherine J. Collins and brother, O.C. Jr.
He is survived by three sons and their wives, Jack Jr. (Lynn), Jesse (Jane) and Jeff (Lori) and Cathy's husband, Ted; six grand children; five great-grandchildren and his sister, Shirley Donaldson.
Jack's family wishes to express gratitude to the nursing staff at Sentara Careplex and The Mayfair House for the excellent loving and tender care given to 'Daddy Jack' in his last months.
Friends are encouraged to visit www.mem.com to share words of comfort with the family.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept.8, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, where a Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery.

I grew up in Pee Dee with Jack and was also a member of HFD. I remember when Jack went into the navy during WW II and his returned home. We had some good times growing up, especially the Hampton River and areas around the River. Jack was a good person and loved his family very much. I would say that his family was his whole life.Jack will be missed by many including myself. Not many of the old Pee Dee gang left these days.

Mr Jack was a wonderful gentleman, who almost appreciated the small things in life, yet he knew the important things as well. He appreciated a simple cup of coffee with his friends at Chick-fil-a (where I met him) and chats with his friends. As for his discussions with me, he always talked about how proud he was of his boys, and showed sadness over the lost of Catherine (whom he always referred to as "My Girl"). Anyone who had this discussion with him, knew how much he loved his family. May the thoughts of how trully loved you are, help you get through this tough time. The thoughts and prayers of many are with you.

While I was visiting PaPa in the hospital one day he made the comment that he didn't know how people survived without having family to visit and said that he was glad to have all of us around. During these past months I feel like we have become closer and I am sure we have made PaPa, Grandma and my mom proud. I love each one of you and am proud to call you my family :)

Jeff and family-I am thankful for the time I had to be a small part of your family. Both of your parents were very special to me and their memories will always be treasured. Your father's humor and joking always kept me on my toes. Jack was always willing to show off his creative side -I learned about pop-riveting a plane and how to build a wood stove that would heat the entire house to what seemed like 100 degrees.

Your Dad had the biggest grin-usually mischevious.

Glad I have these memories. My thoughts are with you all now and for the road ahead.

Jesse, Jack Jr., Jeff and family,

My deepest sympathies for your loss. Jack Sr. represented the highest qualities of a loving and nurturing father and I greatly admired him. The truest evidence of what a great person he was is the way he was a friend to all that met him and the way he raised all of you with kindness, compassion and high family values. His legacy lives on through you all.

Mr. Jack Barbour SR.
Jack was a mentor and great friend to me. I was his replacement at NASA so he said. We both shared the same thoughts and feelings about how aircraft were to be built stronger, lighter, and with the use of mechanical fasteners. Jack said he would be able to retire as soon as he got me trained. Eight to ten years later he was still training me. What a wonderful man. We laughed and joked and to hear his laugh was a delight. His skills were beyond the best. He had idea’s that if NASA would have incorporated then, would be beyond were we are today. Gone are that kind of skills he possessed. He was an artisan and I am honored to have known Jack and to have worked with him.
