Levater McKinnon Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Levater Williams McKinnon was born on Feb. 23, 1929, to the late Henry and Lila Williams. She departed this earthly life on Sept. 2, 2008, in her home in Newport News, Va.
She was native of Cumberland County, N.C., where she received her early education. She retired from the Newport News School System after working with them for many years.
Her early religious experiences were at Union Oak A.M.E. Zion Church in North Carolina. It was there that she accepted the Lord into her life at an early age. She served in the young adult choir. Later, after making Newport News her home, she joined Walters Temple A.M.E. Zion Church under the leadership of the Rev. A.C. Littlejohn. She sang in the gospel chorus for a number of years.
Levater was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry and Lila Williams; her sisters, Nezzie Meekins, Rutha Mae Williams and Isadora Coachman; and her brothers, Clinton Manuel Williams, Henry Howard Williams, and James Weldon Williams Sr.
Those left to cherish the precious memories of her life are her sisters, Olivia Gaylor, Esteria Bathea and Annette Alterman; her brothers, John Williams, William Carlton Williams (Naomi), and Roscoe Lee Williams (Rutell); her two loving daughters, Valeria Robinson and Janet Andrews; her son, Jerry McKinnon (Joanne); her grandchildren, Jerry Jenkins (Vathsana), Shanda Jenkins, Nishetta Peeples, Chiquita Anderson and Donald Anderson; her great-grandchildren, Malik Jenkins, Jerael Jenkins, Jaiden Jenkins, Zhanae Blizzard, Amir Blizzard and Armon Blizzard; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who will miss her greatly.
The family will gather for a Memorial Service on Monday, Sept. 8, 2008. It will be conducted by the Rev. A.C. Littlejohn at noon at Greater Walters A.M.E. Zion Church. The church is located at 656 28th St., Newport News. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
