Mattie Spratt Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Mattie Page Spratt, 84, died peacefully at her home Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, after a brief illness. At the time of her death she was surrounded by her loving and devoted children.
Born February 5, 1924, in Williamsburg, Va., to the late Charles C. and Elmira New, Page was a lifetime member of James River Baptist Church. She graduated from Matthew Whaley in 1941 and completed business school in Richmond, Va. Page retired in 1994 with more than twenty years of service in the accounting department of Williamsburg Community Hospital.
Page considered her family one of life's greatest blessings. A loving mother, sister, grandmother and aunt, she devoted countless hours to these relationships, serving as a model of patience and kindness while raising her children and later generously sharing her creative talents with her grandchildren.
She will be remembered for her fierce love of God, her family and her church. She possessed a selfless spirit and a genuine desire to help those in need. She spent many days tending her flowers and her vegetable garden as well as cooking and sharing the fruits of those labors with family and friends.
Page is survived by daughter, Wynne Barthurst of Williamsburg; daughter, Debbie Sheets and husband, Randy, of Vilas, N.C.; son, Charlie Spratt and wife, Susan, of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Kelly and Nathan Sheets of Vilas, N.C., and Catherine and Jenny Spratt of Williamsburg; brother, Herbert New of Alexandria, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Charles Garland New.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, Va. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at James River Baptist Church with burial immediately following at the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to James River Baptist Church, 4931 Centerville Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185

To the Spratt family,
Our prayers are with you and your family. I lost my Dad in 1980 and Cindy has lost both of her parents. We know its a numbing experiece. The great relief is that the Lord has a plan and that we are loved by Him as His children. May all the Lord's grace and blessings be with you and your family. Our prayers are with you and so are our hearts,

To the entire Spratt family,

We are very touched by the beautiful description of Mrs. Spratt's life and passions in her obituary. Though we did not meet her we know a little about her because her love and handiwork is reflected in you. She was an extraordinary woman to have nurtured and developed your family. Please know you are very special to us, and we pray the Lord will comfort you at this time of sorrow.

Love,

Beverly Benner

My prayers are with the family of Page Spratt. I met Page in the early 1990s when a governmental employee asked that I help her relocate to another residence due to I-199 being built through her acreage and home. We never discussed the Lord, but I could tell that she was one of His by her conduct. I remember that several viewed houses did not feel like home to Page until we came to a Season's Trace residence with an open area where she felt she could garden. She shared with me the fact that she gardened not only for herself but for her neighbors as well. She said that it was the prettiest home we had seen. She was willing to give up her pet for this home. I also remember that Charlie encouraged her in seeking another home by stating that not everyone has her opportunity.
