Janet Smith Obituary

GLOUCESTER - Janet L. Smith, 101, died on Sept. 9, 2008, at Walter Reed Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester, Va.
Janet was born on Jan. 10, 1907, to James and Annie Lee in Gloucester, Va. She was the older of two children. She joined the Smithfield Baptist Church at an early age and served as an Usher and supported her church in many ways throughout her life, either monetarily, cooking, and many other jobs that were instrumental to the upkeep of her church.
Janet was married to the late Clinton Smith of Gloucester. They had no children but were very supportive to their many nieces and nephews throughout their lives. Mrs. Smith was employed by the late lawyer, James Bland Martin for 43 years before retiring at the age of 83. Ms. Janet as she was known in the Martin's household, was privileged in hosting parties for some influential politicians in Virginia. She was instrumental in preparing the home for the famous Garden Tours of homes in Gloucester every year. Janet was an avid gardener and was often complimented on her beautiful lawn and flower beds. Janet was known for being a stylish dresser and carried herself with a strong sense of dignity and pride.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton; her parents, James and Annie Lee; and sister, Estelle Gregory.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Walter Reed Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center especially the Nurses and Aides on Abingdon Unit for the care that she received during her final years.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Smithfield Baptist Church in Gloucester with Pastor Steven Daniels officiating.
