Anthony Hulcher Obituary

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - Anthony Bruce Hulcher, 50, a native of Hampton, and resident of Huntsville, Ala., the past 8 years, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008.
He was a graduate of Old Dominion University, with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering. In addition to his engineering knowledge, Bruce was a uniquely talented machinist and mechanical designer. He worked for many years at Mastan in Poquoson and at ADVEX in Hampton. It was this experience that made him such a good engineer. In 1996, Bruce's career moved to NASA Langley Research Center, where he spent three years working as a Research Engineer. While he was at Langley, he earned his Master's degree by developing hardware for robotic fabrication of composite materials. Once he finished graduate school, Bruce was hired by the Nonmetallic Materials Division at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Bruce played important roles at Marshall in NASA's Exploration program, where he served as an expert in composite fabrication and also as a member of a team that developed composite materials design properties for the ARES-I launch vehicle.
Bruce was preceded in death by his mother, father, and sister.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Bonnie Wornom Hulcher; his daughter, Allie Taylor Hulcher; and a brother and two sisters, Gus Hulcher, Patricia Madden, and Nancy Gilmer, and their families.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home by Dr. M. Reginald Warren. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Clearview Cancer Institute, 3601 CCI Drive, Huntsville, AL, 35805. Online condolences to www.claytorrollins.com.
Bruce was loved and respected by all of his colleagues and will be missed by his friends and family. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Dear Bonnie and Allie,

My thoughts are prayers are with you. May God bring you the comfort and peace that only He can bring.

I knew Bruce for 8 years. He and I shared an interest in Bluegrass music. He would often come into my office and we would talk about the songs and artists we like. He will be missed by all.

With Sympathy,

Steven Phillips

Dear Bonnie and Allie,

I'm one of Bruce's NASA co-workers. I wanted both of you to know that I share your heartache. I trust that God will provide comfort to Bruce's family and friends, but most of all to both of you.

Bruce and I shared a number of interests, including a fondness for American history. We often quizzed each other with historical trivia. Bruce's nickname for me was "Gamaliel" (the middle name of President Warren G. Harding) and mine for him was "Simpson" (the middle name of President Ulysses S. Grant).

Bruce also had quite a sense of humor. He had a habit of barging into my office, with a Groucho Marx-like stride, always grabbing up a miniature football helmet from my desk, while cracking me up in the process.

Aside from not having access to his considerable engineering expertise, it will be these lighthearted moments with Bruce that I'll miss most of all.

With Sincere Sympathy,

Tamatha Smith

To Bruce's family and friends: Bruce was my co-worker. I'm responsible for coordinating tours of our composites laboratory. Bruce always enjoyed being a tour guide telling our guests about composite manufacturing. I would always see him and another co-worker, Raj Kaul walking and exercising during their lunch break. Bruce made a positive impact on my life. I really enjoyed working with Bruce and he will be missed.

To Bruce's family and friends: Please know that we are praying for you. I worked with Bruce here in Huntsville, always enjoyed his commitment and enthusiasm. Bruce loved to share the important things in his life, he would call or email with something he wanted me to think about or go listen to. He is terribly missed and I'm sorry I can't attend his funeral tomorrow.

Dear Bonnie and Allie,
My heart aches for you in the loss of your husband and father. Your entire family has been special to me since childhood. Virginia was the first Sunday school teacher that I can remember being at the age of ten and realizing that my Sunday school teacher was getting married and then later having twins. I remember when you all left Orcutt to move to Alabama. Don't forget that your Orcutt family loves you very much.
