John Major Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - John Arthur Major Sr., long-time resident of Denbigh, passed away peacefully in his home May 18, 2006. He was preceded in death by first wife, Patricia; brother, Frank; sisters, Bette, Marilou, and Jane. He is survived by his second wife, Jayne; his sisters, Lois Dowdell, Anne Marie Glyde, and Peggy Ann McCafferty; his brothers, Joe, Tom, and Tony Major; his children, John, Richard, and Patricia Long of Newport News; Deborah McGowan of San Jose, Calif. and Robert of Bloomington, Ind.; his stepchildren Frankie Bridges and Lisa Anderson of Williamsburg, and Tara Moore of Newport News; his nine grandchildren, extended family and numerous friends. 'Jack' will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered. Born in Scranton, Pa. in March of 1933, Jack first moved to Cleveland, Ohio where his children were born. He was then transferred by his company to Virginia in 1967. Employed by Dow Badische until his retirement in the late 1990s, Jack was more well known in the Denbigh community as 'Coach' Major. From 1970 through the late 1980s, Jack coached as many as three teams in the Denbigh Little League sports of baseball, basketball, and football. Jack was also a member of the American Legion, Post 368, where he spent many of his retirement years with his family and many friends. 'Known for his humor, Jack was a strong family man who loved his wife and children, and doted on his grandchildren.' Visitation will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 21 at Altmeyer Funeral Home - Denbigh Chapel. Funeral will take place 11 a.m. Monday, May 22 at St. Jerome's Church. Interment to follow at Peninsula Memorial Cemetery. Donations to the American Cancer Society, in lieu of flowers, would be gratefully acknowledged by the family. I treasure the memory of sitting with Mr. Major and my friend Rick, his son, as we watched a classic 80's Lakers-Celtics game. I was comforted greatly by Mr. Major's presence and words after the loss of our friend Lynn. Majors all, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
