Warner was da man.
I grew up in Buffalo idolizing the Sabres and Bills and Warner was always around after the games hangin out, especially at the Old Aud. I'm not old enough to remember The Courier in Buffalo, but I do remember Warner.
He and my dad had mutual friends and soon began hanging out a lot. I picture "Hess" with those totally retro, even tho they were totally cool at the time, over-sized tinted sunglasses and chain smoking with a grin on his face. He was a great guy.
Later during the Bills Super Bowl years, my Dad and friends Mark Schmidt and others used to tag along with Hess. I always wanted to go but was still in high school. My Dad told stories of them running into guys like Mohammed Ali, Kevin Coster and Eddie Murphy and others at the Super Bowl parties. You know Hess loved just being there.
Years later, I wound up going to Maine for college and through a wild twist of fate I got a job writing for The Eastern League and local papers covering sports. I guess you could say I fell into it growing up around all the Buffalo athletes and great guys like Hess and Sabres photographer Bill Wippert.
Covering sports in Maine was covering sports in Maine - not exactly the center of the universe - but after a while (idolizing Hess and his Super Bowl parties from afar) I worked my way into covering the four majors.
On Sept. 28, 2003 we came full circle.
I headed down to Landover to cover the Patriots/Redskins and gave Warner a call ahead of time. We had a blast. I couldn't get over the "open" Redskins press box or the Redskins cheerleaders and I told Hess so. We laughed and shared a butt at halftime in the hall of RFK.
"What's wrong with the Redskins?"
Patrick Ramsey was pretty bad that day and Steve Spurrier didn't have any answers, but all in all we had a great time. That was the last time I saw him.
I'm currently in my sixth year at The Star-Ledger in Newark and I'm still covering sports. Haven't made it to any Super Bowl parties yet, but I have my fingers crossed I'll see Hess across the room and we'll share another smoke.

Cindy,
Warner was one of the friendliest people we have ever met. We bought 2 cars from him and thought he was the nicest and most honest salesmen we've ever dealt with. We were very touched and saddened by his 'goodbye' letter we received a few weeks ago. We are so sorry for your loss.

Back when Warner and I were covering the Sabres (he for the Courier-Express and I for a local radio station), we got to be good friends. Warner was always nice to me (print reporters weren't always so open to electronic types) and I had a great deal of respect for the way he went after the story and didn't mind who he offended when necessary with his reporting. Warner was also good company when some of us were known to visit local taverns to discuss the games we had just watched, It's odd that he and Dick Johnston, who covered the Sabres at the same time for the Buffalo News, passed away a few weeks apart. We'll fondly remember Warner up here.

Cindy, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Warner was a great guy. I worked with him all 21 years of his career at the daily press... and never once did I see him without that award winning smile of his. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Cindy, my heart sank when I learned of Warner passing away. Both Dee and myself bought cars from Warner...actually I bought 2. But each time I went there he would come up and give me a hug and we'd stand there and talk. He was an awesome person and I know that I will miss him! Take care.

Cindy, We are so sorry to hear of Warner's death. You both were so kind to us from the day we moved next door. Chance more excited about having Warner live next door to him than anything else. He hoped he would finally start winning his company pool with Warner's help. We loved standing in the front yard talking to him and we enjoyed his sense of humor. He will be missed.

I did not know Mr. Hessler but I am from Buffalo and I remember his reporting on the Bills and Sabres in the Buffalo Courier Express, which was a great newspaper made greater by Mr. Hessler. My sincere condolences to the family.

I didn't even like football, but I enjoyed reading Warner's column. I appreciated his zest for life. He was always willing to talk and share, even let me interview him for a college Journalism paper. He will be deeply missed.

Warner was the best Redskins writer out there, bar none, if you really wanted to know what was going on with the team or what had happened in a game, good or bad. His enthusiasm never waivered and was always evident in his walk, his copy and his push through life. I hadn't seen Warner in several years, but I've thought of him often, and always with a smile. What a guy.
