Mary Shields Obituary

Mary Margaret Shields of Faber passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2008.

Margaret was born December 20, 1916, at the "old Martin homestead", Hickory Creek, the home of the late John T. "Tom" and Mary Louise Shields. She was predeceased by her brother, John T. Shields Jr.

Margaret worked with county Agent John Whitehead at the Nelson County Extension office in Lovingston and was a secretary for the University of Virginia Urology Department. She was an active member of Cove Presbyterian Church, a lifelong Democrat, in fact had been a Chairman of the East District Nelson County Democratic Committee. Margaret was a member of the Old Dominion chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and an ardent supporter of University of Virginia football where she could be found at football games ringing a cowbell for the Cavaliers. She loved animals, naming the cows on her farm and supported the Nelson County Humane Society. She was once the Humane Society's Santa Claus for people who wanted to have their dogs' picture taken with Santa.

Margaret supported Nelson County in many ways. She was a member of the Nelson Memorial Library Advisory Committee, the Nelson County Litter Control and Recycling Committee, the Nelson County Rescue Squad Auxiliary, and the Nelson County Historical Society.

Margaret is survived by her brother Martin H. Shields of Waynesboro, Virginia; her nephews, John T. "Tom" Shields of Boston, Massachusetts, Fred Shields of Atlanta, Georgia, Bill Shields of Waynesboro, Virginia; her nieces, Marylee Smith of Chesterfield, Virginia, Dotty Joyce Stapleford of Richmond, Virginia; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, February 24, 2008, at Cove Presbyterian Church in Covesville, Virginia.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Margaret's family. She was a wonderful woman. Always so full of herself and life. She used to check with me fairly often; always keeping up with the political scene in Nelson County. I have truly missed seeing her and talking to her.

We first met Margaret while working with the Nelson County Humane Society. As Republicans, we had some good-natured "debates" with her after the meetings. Margaret will always have a place in our fondest memories.
