Robert Grant "Red" Shipley

Robert Shipley Obituary

Robert Grant "Red" Shipley peacefully passed away with family by his side on Saturday, October 6, 2007, at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Allison L. and Oma Huff Shipley; a brother, Jack Shipley; and a sister, Jewell S. Gooch.

Red was one of Orange County's best known citizens following more than 50 years in the radio broadcasting industry.

Born in Johnson City, Tennessee, Red's younger years were filled with listening to Blue Grass and country music greats such as Bill Monroe, Ralph and Carter Stanley and Mac Wiseman.

From those early childhood years Red never wanted to be anything but a country music disc jockey.

The Shipley family moved to Orange County following World War II. Red attended Orange County schools and began the career he always wanted by broadcasting Orange County High School football games on local radio station WJMA before he graduated in 1956.

Within three years of graduation Red had moved to WPRW in Manassas where he quickly became one of Northern Virginia's most popular morning ride DJ's.

The career ladder then took Red to Warrenton and Big K Country. Big K became one of the top five rated Country radio stations during Red's tenure. Red's time at Big K brought much national recognition and an appearance on the popular Hee Haw television show.

From Big K Red went to WPIK in Alexandria where he was both the morning drive DJ and program manager. Red ended his first radio career following his time at WPIK, but during that time he developed his first bluegrass show which eventually led him to his 25 year career as host of Stain Glass Bluegrass.

In 1982 Red was called on to host the show on WAMU on a temporary basis. Red moved back to Orange and radio broadcasting in 1995. He returned to regular DJ duties with WJMA. With a special arrangement with WAMU in Alexandria, Red continued to broadcast Stain Glass Bluegrass from Orange.

Red suffered a major stroke two years ago that left him paralyzed on his right side. Unable to continue as morning DJ at WJMA, Red was able to continue as host of Stain Glass Bluegrass.

Red remained the host of Stain Glass Bluegrass for more than 25 years, which was his goal following the stroke. His last show as host of Stain Glass Bluegrass was broadcast three weeks prior to his passing on September 16, 2007.

Stain Glass Bluegrass was a very special labor of love for Red and brought him much satisfaction and acclaim.

The International Bluegrass Music Association presented Red his highest honor, Broadcaster of the Year in 2006. The East Coast Bluegrass Association presented Red a Special Recognition Award for his 25 years of hosting Stain Glass Bluegrass in August of this year in a ceremony Red was able to attend.

Red leaves behind a loving family. Survivors include two sons and two daughters, Robert Bradley Shipley of Orange, Christy Ann Wise and her companion, Tim Clarke, of Spotsylvania, Cynthia Page Shipley and her companion, Milton Maxton, of Louisa and Jeffrey Grant Shipley and his wife, Gail, of Gordonsville. Grandchildren include Matthew Ryan Wise and Angela Nicole Wise of Spotsylvania and "Scooter" Lee Shipley of Gordonsville.

Family night will be at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville from 6 until 9 p.m. Thursday, October 11, 2007.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2007, at the Preddy Funeral Home in Gordonsville. Burial will be private.

The family requests those wishing to make a memorial contribution forward those contributions to the International Bluegrass Music Association in Red's name. The IBMA address is The International Bluegrass Music Museum, 207 East Second Street, Owensboro, KY 42303; Institution devoted to preserving the history of bluegrass music.

The family wishes to say a special "thank you" to Bob Webster, Nick Henry and Al Martin for their special friendships during his illness.

To the Family of "Red" Shipley,
May the peace of God be with you and may He give you strength as you grieve the loss of your beloved "Red".
My dad, Edward Ashley, was an avid listener of Stain Glass Bluegrass and WAMU. Often times Dad would call in a special request and "Red" would gladly play the song. Now your beloved "Red" is fulfilling special requests in Heaven.

I once shared with Red, that quite a few years ago when I was still living at home,my father would turn on and turn up Stain Glass Bluegrass on Sunday mornings. I admit it took a while to get use to but as I got older it grew on me. Now, many years later,my daughter would come to say,"daddy turn our music on".I guess tradition is a good thing.I last spoke to Red just a few weeks ago and thanked him for his time and told him how much he would be missed. Now,I would like to thank his family for sharing him with my family.Thankyou. GOD bLESS you all, Steve, Debra and Maura.

Red was truly one of the good guys in the radio business. I have a lot of respect for people like Red who were able to survive the many changes radio has experienced over the years. I'm glad I had the opportunity to know and work with him.

To All The Shipley Family:

Our family wishes to express our deepest condolences at the passing of Red.

My family and I were listeners of Red's programs back in his days at WRFL radio, in Winchester, Va. and WKCW radio, in Warrenton, Va. and we feel that he was truly an "institution" here in the DC area, when it comes to Bluegrass Radio personalities, and even to those of us who never got to meet him personally, he was very much as one of his long time radio compadres, Mr. Jerry Gray would say, a "long-time friend."

We felt a great loss in a sentimental sort of way, at Red's retirement, and also when he and all the other Bluegrass DJ's at WAMU, were relegated recently to HD radio, but now it is more than an understatement to say that we feel a much, much, greater loss at Red's passing.

He was indeed a fine DJ, with I think, the finest taste in the Bluegrass Gospel music, he chose to present on "Stained-Glass Bluegrass"
and in our hosehold, and I'm sure in every home his program was "welcomed" into, he will be sorely missed, and always fondly remembered.

In closing, I would like to leave with a few parting words, a sort of "mini eulogy", if you will, to Red, and I hope that all who read would approve.

May you rest in peace Red, your job here, I believe, was very well done, and in tribute to the years of enjoyment that you brought into each of our homes, I'd like to echo the words that you spoke to each of us at the end of each of your broadcasts, and say
"Many Great Thanks" to you sir, and "Ah Toodley Doo" !

God Bless, and Godspeed to you Red.

We lost a true legend of Radio. I worked with Red in the twilight of his career at WJMA. As a young broadcaster I looked up to Red. Every morning, as I entered WJMA, I hoped to hear an old story about “Radio”. Red was one of the best story tellers I have ever known. I will cherish my memories of talks in the studio and stories of the glory days of Radio. What I hope Stained Glass Blue Grass listener know is that Red saw the show as a ministry. With love he put on his headphones every Sunday morning and through the music he cherished he spread the word of redemption to thousands of people. I don’t know if Red ever pondered this or not, but I often wondered how many people over the years found peace through his work. I am proud to have known him and better for it. May Red’s memory live on and his mark on this world last forever. God Bless you Red.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Our family has lost a personal friend of many years. My grandfather, Rev. Joe Freeman, had a Sunday morning radio program on Big K in Warrenton and Red was the engineer that made this happen for him every week. We've followed him and loved him since then. The world has lost a shining light - we can look forward to hearing him again in Heaven.

Red was an early personality at WJMA and capped his career by returning to his home station fifty years later. Orange enjoyed his style and selections. I am glad to have known him.
