Wilmer Moomaw Obituary

Wilmer Edmund Moomaw, 69, Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia, died on Wednesday, December 19, 2007, in Charlottesville.

Ned Moomaw was born and raised in Orkney Springs, Virginia, where his parents, the late Wilmer E. and Nellie S. Moomaw ran Shrine Mont, The Conference Center of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, for many years.

He was the first in his family to earn a degree from the University of Virginia. Since that first one in 1961, in his immediate family alone there have been seven more, including his own Ph.D. in American Constitutional Law. His academic and administrative career took him from Charlottesville, throughout the Southeast, to Western and Eastern Europe, England, and the Far East, and finally back to Charlottesville for the last 20 years. He delighted in teaching fourthyear undergraduates about the First and Fourteenth Amendments. His fourth-year seminars always were among the most popular classes in the Department of Politics and he always received perhaps the best evaluations in the Department. One student, not knowing it was the last, wrote the following about Ned's last class last spring: "Professor Moomaw is a class act. It doesn't get any better than this."

Ned Moomaw is survived by his wife, Suzanne, of Charlottesville; two daughters, Elizabeth Moomaw Peyton and her husband, Will, of Charlottesville, and Amy Moomaw Goodnight and her husband, Will, of Charlotte; and a son, Wilmer Edmund Moomaw III of Charlottesville; and five grandchildren. He is survived also by two brothers, Donald and his wife Thelma of Orkney Springs; John and his wife Judi of Orkney Springs; and a sister, Carolyn Chilton and her husband John, also of Orkney Springs. There also is a whole Moomaw clan of cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Along his long academic and administrative career, there were many awards, recognitions, and memberships. In the many times he was asked about the accomplishment of which he was most proud, his reply was always the same: "That all my children still come home."

The family suggests that those wishing to do memorials consider making them to Shrine Mont, The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, 110 West Franklin Street, Richmond, VA 23220.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 22, 2007, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Route 250 West of Charlottesville in Greenwood, Virginia. A committal service for the family will take place on Sunday, December 23, 2007, at the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration in Orkney Springs, Virginia.

Hill and Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Suzanne, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I was not aware of your family's Orkney Springs history until now. When I was in my early teens, I attended Camp Bear Wallow for a couple of years, where we ate our meals in the grand dining hall of the spa resort that is there (not sure if this is the same as the Shrine Mont). I loved the area, and I remember now, 45 years later, the Moomaw name, which seemed so southern and exotic to me at the time. I wish you well in this difficult time, and I hope to see you at the next Everday Democracy event.

I was so sorry to see this listing. Although I had not been in touch for years, I was one of those fourth year students (in 1988) who took his seminar - the class was wonderful as was the opportunity to make the acquaintance of such an interesting man.

My wife, Doris Bowman, taught at Triplett High School in Mt. Jackson during the time Ned was in school there. I attended Triplett for two years from 1955 to 1957 and was one year behind Ned. We both remember Ned very well and are very sorry to learn of his death. We were pleased to renew our acquaintance with Ned at the 50th class reunion of the Triplett class of 1956.

For Suzanne and Will. You are both very special to me and my thoughts and prayers are with you. Ned was such a class act, so delightful to be with, full of wit. The child within him lived still. retta

The summer of 1957 was when a group of friends and I joined Ned in working at Shrinemont, peeling potatoes, washing dishes and waiting on tables. The Rev. Tucker ministered to all of us at the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, and the whole summer was a unique experience. I can still picture Ned's grandma keeping all of us college kids in line, making the boys mash the potatoes, and work in the "glass room." Having lost touch with him, it is great to hear he distinguished himself as a teacher, and devoted family man.

The Augusts of several decades of my life were spent at Shrine Mont and some of my most enchanting memories are populated by Moomaws of Orkney Springs. I offer my condolences to a remarkable family . Further, I find a sweet symmetry in the fact that Mr. Moomaw's final journey will be to a beautiful spot in the wooded mountains of Virginia that has always whispered to me of resurrection.

What a tremendous loss --not only to family, friends and students but also to those like me who enjoyed and valued each occasional contact.

The world is, indeed, a poorer place without Ned.

Although I did not know Mr. Moomaw personally, the Moomaw family has touched my life for many years. From St. George's camp when I was a little girl to recent family vacations at Shrine Mont. Our deepest sympathy to all of you.
