This is Karen's dad, Rich Swauger.
I don't know if you were aware of Karen's death back on April 8th, 2009.
She is in her Father's arms now. I loved her so much as you all loved Ethan but she had an appointment with God and I had to let her go.
I think of the times we were at Bethesda, Walter Reed and so many Dr appts and know that she was always concerned about others.
And one more note.... Jose is once again at Bethesda having another surgery.
Please know that Karen loved you all.

As a person who also carries your name (Biggers), I feel great pride in knowing that a Biggers, such as Ethan, is carrying on the great military tradition of service and commitment to his country while willing to sacrifice his own life for the safety of others. That's a true American Hero! As a former member of NYPD, I lost friends in the World Trade Center Attack, and spent many hours there myself, and truly appreciate Ethan's, and every other enlisted persons, courage and dedication to protect our future as a free nation. What can I say or do to take away the pain, nothing, so I will not pretend that I know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I saw a brief note in the Charlotte Observer, and wanted to contact you and let you know how much we are thinking of your family. I want you to know as many people do how much Ethans' sacrifice means to us. He seems to have been a honerable and fine man.
I was also stunned to hear of the loss of Mr. Biggers as well. No family should have to suffer this amount of loss.

As I sit here and think about all of the time I spent with your family at WRAMC (when I was visiting Jose Pequeno and Ethan), I have to say that I am honored to have met you. Your dedication was unwavering. I'll always treasure the picture I have of Ethan. The last time I saw Ethan was Thanksgiving Day, when I came up to WRAMC to sit with him so that your family could have a nice dinner. Matt, thanks for letting me spend time with him that day. I'll be forever grateful that that's how I spent Thanksgiving.

I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.

A soldier died today
And no one stopped to look his way
But his sacrifice was not in vain
For freedom it bestows on those who remain
But what of him this soldier brave
Only an epitaph and an earthen grave
His reward should be much more
Lest we forget who his blood spilt for

And let us never look away
But rather stand up in humble pride
And realize it was for us that he died

As I read Ethan’s story and feel your loss I have an overwhelming feeling of my son’s Adams presents telling me he and Ethan are okay and happy now.
I know you have had a long journey of grief and loss in your family.
But please remember Ethan is not lost to you and never will be. I hope you feel his love and presents in your life and know he is always there.
Adam was killed in Iraq on 10-31-05 with four other heroes by an IED. They too were 101st, Ft Campbell Heroes.
