On Friday night many of Ian's local friends joined at the house with Dr. Clarkson and his wife, and Jean and Anne. It was wonderful to see everyone, albeit under such sorrowful circumstances. Ian will be greatly missed. He was definitely one of the most interesting fellows I have every met in my life. One day many years ago we were down at the camp partying away, just the two of us before some others arrived. It was early spring I think. All of a sudden a hummingbird flew up right in between us at eye level and stayed there for several moments looking from one of us to the other. We looked at the bird and then at each other astonished - remarkable. I can only think of one other thing to say at this point. If a man was loved by his family and his friends, they indeed, his life was worthwhile. Miss you brother.

My brother Drew and I enrolled at The Allendale/Columbia School and started classes there in the fall of 1978. From that day forward the Clarksons and Townsons were completely intertwined in each other’s lives.
Jean Clarkson and I became fast friends as did our brothers, Ian and Drew. Ian and Drew took it to a whole other level. They graduated together, went to college together, had a dorm room together and joined a frat together. Ian had become my brother as Jean had become my sister…and still is. Dr. and Mrs. Clarkson were wonderful to me and Drew.
I remember how protective of me Ian could be when Drew was not around.
I have such fond memories of being with him, how intelligent, inventive and funny he was. Soft spoken and yet a loud presence of character and charisma to anyone who met him. He is “Magnetic” as Drew would say.
I remember him drinking martinis with my mother at Cannon’s restaurant and how incredibly well they got along. She raised her glass to him and said; “Here’s how.”
She was an intellect and found him absolutely amazing!
As did everyone!!!
There are far too many memories to list, but I am so glad to have that list!
The last time I saw Ian was at my Dad’s funeral. He enveloped me in the most protective “I love you” hug a brother could give. His presence gave Drew strength to get through that day and I thanked him for that…
To Jean, Ann and Dr. Clarkson, I send you back the strength Ian gave to me and Drew to get through the tough times ahead.
I am having several beers in Ian’s honor tonight. Ian, hug your Mother and have a martini with my Mom and give her a hug from me.
“Here’s how!” and cheers, my brother, Ian!
All my love and sympathy,

Very sad to hear of Ian's passing. He was such an easy-going person to be around. Very considerate, a fun risk-taker, a bright and gifted person, easy to get laughing - and a great laugh at that. I will celebrate his life Friday evening as will others in Rochester and beyond.

To the Clarkson Family,
I am the husband of my late wife Wendy Schopfer that went to college with Ian.
I was so shocked to hear about Ian today. I remember meeting him at Graig's wedding and then hanging out with him camping at Cayuga Lake the next day. He was such a nice guy.
I'm sorry for your loss.

We are very saddened to hear this news. Ian was a good friend and brother through the years at Wittenberg and when we lived in Rochester and I was working at the University.
Our heart felt condolences to the Clarkson family.

I'm so sorry to hear about Ian. We had a lot of fun hanging out back when we lived in Rochester after graduating from college. My deepest condolences go to his family.
