Today, and every day we honor you and your service to our country. I share your story each and every year with my class. They know your name from the memorials throughout the town. They look at your picture on the "Wall of Fame" in my classroom. Thank you for your service. Thank you for your patriotism. Thank you for your sacrifice. You are missed.

I never met Nick, I am a retired Marine that served in Iraq and I can honestly tell you that I look at your son as a true hero. With his forward thinking Nick is doing his part to change the world to a better place. PFC Madaras IS A HERO not just to us but he is a hero to all the kids around the world that because of Nick have a ball to play with. God bless you Nick.

I just saw Nick’s incredible story on ESPN this Memorial Day 2009. I have sent this, his story, to all the people I know via email. Though I have endured some bit of personal pain in my life recently...I am ashamed of wallowing in self-pity after seeing and hearing Nick’s story, a true example of selfless service and a legacy of love all peoples wherever they live should strive to emulate! Please, Kick For Nick!

I just finished watching the documentary on ESPN. I used to live in Stamford, CT but I am now in Cary, NC. I originally heard Wilton, CT so I started listening only to hear that it was about Nick..someone I don't know but the story touched me beyond words and I couldnt stop watching. I began to cry when I saw this...the smiles on the childrens faces in Iraq are all possible because of Nick's dream. May he rest in peace.

Dear Shalini, Bill, Marie and Christopher,

Although we never had the pleasure of meeting your son and brother, we were deeply moved by the tribute about Nick Madaras that ESPN aired on Memorial Day. Nick’s determination to help the children of Iraq by sharing his love of soccer is truly an inspiration to all of us. He was clearly an extraordinary young man, and his commitment to make a positive impact in this world will forever be his legacy.
We are truly honored to participate in the KICK FOR NICK program. In addition to contributing four new soccer balls (through the collection box at Villanova University) to be sent to the children in Iraq, we will do our best to keep Nick’s memory alive by spreading word of his compassion and this special cause.
We hope that you are comforted by knowing that Nick continues to touch people throughout the world. We pray that his message of love for others can bring peace to this world and to you.

Sincerely

Barbara, Paul, Christopher, Lauren and James Dzera

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Nicholas, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I served with Madaras over in Iraq. We were in the same unit. A couple of my soldiers were friends with him. A great soldier, guy and friend. He's deeply missed in our unit...I was amazed that I saw ESPN or the media for that matter do a story on someone that doesn't make millions. It was an amazing story..

Saw the ESPN piece by complete accident over Memorial Day weekend and felt moved to offer what I can. Condolences to the Madaras family ... thankfully, I have no idea what you have been through. But Nick still lives on and has affected countless not just in our country but across the world. I just saw the story of Nick on ESPN. May 6th, 2008, I lost my 19 year old nephew Pfc. Aaron J. Ward in Iraq. The soccer story of Nick is touching and what he did for children at home and Iraq is tremendous. Beyond soccer though, the sacrifice Nick made for our country is nothing short of heroic. I'm deeply sorry for your families loss and know that pain far too well. I know Nick's belief and commitment to what he served for was nothing less than the commitment my nephew Aaron made. May they both rest in peace. God bless.

I pray for comfort and peace to entire Madaras family at the loss of their son. Nick is a young man that all Americans can be proud of and grateful for their service to our country and the world. I was touched by the ESPN feature. I think of the joy the children of Iraq feel when receiving a ball. This simple act of caring in honor of Nick speaks volumes of the good America brings to the world in many ways so few know. I wish the world could view this segment in hope to bring peace among all people. I also think of my own four sons. As much as I would fear their safety, I would be proud to have them serve in the same force as did Nick. God Bless and peace to all.

no words can soothe the grief of the family suffering the loss of a child, just know that Nicholas as brought the hateful world a bit closer to seeing the love that the American people are willing to share with all the humans regardless of thier personal beliefs. I grieve for the loss of such a young man, who at such a young age achieved such understanding and love for others, an achievement that takes most of us a life time to realize. My deepest condolences go out to Pfc. Nicholas A. Madaras and his family. When I saw the ESPN report this morning about the tragedy and the soccer ball effort for the children in Iraq it drew a tear from my eye. I am only 20 years old and soccer has been such a part of my life, the whole story hit me hard. Immediately after hearing the story I knew that I wanted to participate in this effort. Please send me more information so I can do my part in the name of Pfc. Madaras. Soccer has brought peace and joy to my life, and Pfc. Madaras gave his life to bring joy and peace to lives of children in a foreign country. God bless you, I will do you proud!

I just happened to be watching ESPN this morning when the special aired on Nick. I was deeply moved by it, especially since my family has a long line of soldiers. My best friend is a Marine and was in Iraq, so I know how hard the situations can be. Luckily, my buddy made it back. My father is a member of the American Legion Post 104 and he is wanting to start a drive like was started in your town. Please send me an email and let me know how the Legion can help.

I saw the special on pfc madaras this morning on espn and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your family and all of the soldiers families for their sacrifice. His story really touched me. Harold Celley

January 28, 2008

Dear Madaras Family,
My name is PFC Harold Celley. I am stationed in FT. LEWIS, Washington. I am 26 years old and heard of your sons story. I know he was only 19 when he passed but he did not go in vein. He died defending the country he so loved with the soul purpose of protecting everyone back home just as I do now. I am in Iraq fighting for the american people and the people of Iraq but I realize after seeing your sons story that I fight with a new purpose. I fight with for the purpose of keeping his honor alive.
He took it upon himself to do something not to many people are brave enough to do, he took it upon himself to ensure the safety of americans and the people of Iraq.
I stand proud to call him my brother in arms but I sincerely apologize for the loss you have endured I really do, for I may not know the pain you go through day to day knowing that your son is not there next to you, I want to tell you I will give my last breath to make sure that he is not forgotten!!
So now I stand and give honor to a man I never met who gave his life for the ultimate cause and whom I admire with undying respect and salute him and will fight for him till the day I pass.
So to the Madaras family I am so sorry for your loss and apologize if i may have repeated myself but for a man with courage as great as his thank for giving birth to him and I ensure you he WILL NEVER be forgotten. If there is anything I can ever do for you let me know and I will do what ever I can.

Dear Shalini, Bill, Marie and Chris,
I did not know Nicholas but just saw the news broadcast about how soccer balls were being collected in his honor. I am so incredibily sorry for your loss. As a wife of a military member my heart breaks for you all. Nicholas I'm sure was an incredible young man as I've read on this website. I wanted you to know as a public school teacher and military wife I make sure my students are aware of the sacrifices these young men, women, and their family members make. I will surely discuss your son in my classroom and how in the mist of war he still was able to see the humanity in the eyes of the Iraqi children and wanted them to have the soccer balls. Unbelievable story, unbelievable young man.
Sincerely,

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

To the Family of Pfc. Nicholas A. Madaras:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

Dear William, Shalini, Christopher and Marie Madaras,

My name is Eric Peterson. I am one of the members of the PSD in which Nick served. There are no words that can express the sorrow I feel for your loss! We all share the grief that you are feeling. We knew and loved him as a brother. I will ALWAYS hold a place for him in my heart and my memories. He was a great man and made a huge impression on me. I will always remember the good times that we had together, and I will think about him every day for the rest of my life. My thoughts and prayers go out to you in this time of need and I pray that God give you the strength to bear the burden of his loss and cherish the memories of how he lived. Nick is gone, but will NEVER be forgotten!

To Nicks family,

I have had the great honor of serving with your son and brother. He was part of the Personal Secyrity Detail for LTC Fisher and I. He was a great soldier and man and we will never forget him. You are all in our hearts and minds with your loss.

To the Madaras Family,

There are no words I can say to express my sincerest condolances on the loss of your son and brother.

I was compelled to attend the service for Nicholas today just to say thank you to him for his courage and bravery to fight in this war.

You obviously raised an amazing young man who the community embraced and will forever remember.

May God bless you and your family.

May God help you through this most difficult time. And when you need a shoulder may it always be near. I am so sad for you and just want to say your son will be remembered for his extreme bravery. And your family for the pain and courage you have endured for the country. May the angels be with your family. In your silence may you know peace.

My heart is so full of sympathy for you at this time. Although we do not know each other at all, I feel a connection because I also have a son serving with the 1-68 and I have also lost a 19 yr old son some years ago, I know the pain and I know that it is so hard to find the "right words" to

share with you. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Through God's grace...

Nicholas was my cousin and did a very very brave thing going to Iraq at his age and keeping his head clear so he could focus on what he wants. Life is so short and I wish I had a little time in the future with Nicholas to get to know him but sadly his life has ended so abruptly. He deserves to be remembered for his courage and determination. God will be looking after you and I will see you in my prayers.

Please know that I am deeply sorry for the loss of Pfc. Nicholas A. Madaras.

As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly,

and as a sister, who has lost a brother to war,

I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing.

The overwhelming heartache, seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes.

Please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.

Ever so softly and slowly, time does heal.

May Nicholas Rest Safely, in the Mighty Arms of God and know that he WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

I pray that God's Loving Comfort and Grace will be with you and your family.

I am the sister, of such a Young Hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.

Surely He hath borne our grief, and carried our sorrow.

Isaiah 53:4

May the memories of your loved one live in your heart always.

Softly and slowly....

Time heals...
