James Marriott Obituary

James Edmund (Jim) Marriott James Edmund "Jim" Marriott left us on August 29, 2010 surrounded by his family after a courageous 3 year battle with cancer. Jim was born April 4, 1949 and raised in Sacramento, to Richard and Geraldine Marriott. His father was the former Mayor of Sacramento from 1968-1975. He atteded Immaculate Conception Elementary School, Christian Brothers High School, and Sacramento City College, where he met his future wife, Kathy. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathy Kimzey Marriott, siblings, Richard Marriott, Marty Marriott, Tina Record (all of Sacramento), Ann Marriott (Portland, OR), Betsy Lieginger, (San Francisco), children, James Marriott and wife (Boise, ID), Joy Dillon and husband, Tim (Yuba City), Sarah Powell and husband Dan, (Yuba City), grandchildren, Kara Marriott, Ashley Dillion, Cameron Powell (all of Yuba City), Jesse Marriott and Anna Marriott (both of Boise, ID). Jim was a Vietnam Veteran and made E5 in 15 months. He served in the U. S. Army from August of 1969 to August of 1972. Jim was very patriotic and loved flying his many flags wherever he was. Jim started his career in the grocery business (being a member of the Retail Clerks Union). He eventually moved his family to the Yuba County Foothills where he and Kathy owned their own general store. Next, Jim turned his efforts into running his own firewood business where he cut 90 cords a year. He then took a job with YSDI and was a member of Operating Engineers Local #3. Jim sustained a major injury which left him medically disabled and put him in retirement. Throughout the years, Jim and his wife Kathy, remodeled many homes. They eventually built their dream home in Brownsville from the ground up. Jim's favorite season was Christmas and decorating the tree that would reach at least 12 feet. He also enjoyed his collection of nutcrackers and reading "The Night Before Christmas" to his grandchildren. Jim enjoyed collecting and playing his many guitars for family and friends. He had an exceptional voice. Jim encouraged many to learn to play and did what he could to get them started, even buying them guitars. Jim loved traveling with his beloved grandkids and was always up for an adventure. He enjoyed many competitive games like horseshoes, croquet, dice and card games. Mostly, he liked to win. One of Jim's favorite places to go was his and Kathy's houseboat, the MerryYacht on Lake Oroville. He was happiest with a boat full of family and friends. Above all, Jim surprised everyone by changing from a city boy to a country man. He learned, by doing, how to build a house, cut firewood or shovel snow. This was along with all skills needed to survive in the mountains, where he and Kathy thought was a good place to raise their family. What stood out most in Jim was his deep love for his wife Kathy. He absolutely adored her and lived his life to please her. Jim was a devoted, loving, caring, thoughtful and giving husband that will be missed more than any words could ever express. To the Marriott family, while we were in Marysville, your family felt like our family. Without Jim that connection would have never happened. He was such a caring man. I'm so sad to see that he is gone...yet so happy we were blessed to know him. All the best to you all. Valerie, Jason & Lauren Keeble

Kathy, James, Joy, Sarah and families, We were so honored to be a part of Jim's celebration of life services. You all did such a wonderful job in honoring your Dad. James, you seemed to say it all. Your Dad was a man of his convictions. Joy, a beautiful tribute to your Dad's loving personality. Sarah, you too, gave us a glimpse of your Dad's perserverence and welcomed and thanked us all for being there. Kathy, you were so beautiful and loving when you got up to read your notes about Jim. It was very touching and sweet, and your reading it just touched all of us immensely. We will never forget it. Cameron and Kara, how brave of you to get up and sing your hearts out for your grandfather. I was crying, but I couldn't help from smiling and keeping the beat.
The Mariotts are quite a family, and Jim would be so proud of all of you.
Rich and I were just in awe.
Love and prayers for all of you.

My heart goes out to you and your family. Jim, who was always "Joy and Sarah's Daddy" to me, shines in my mind as a bright and loving light in the High Sierras. He built a beautiful home and family and was such an important part of my childhood.
