John Murphy Obituary

John J. Murphy "Jack" 1930-2010 PITTSFIELD John J. (Jack) Murphy of Pittsfield died December 6, 2010 at Berkshire Medical Center after a long illness. He was born in the Bronx September 16, 1930, son of Denis and Mae Hunt Murphy and brother of the late Maureen Murphy. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School, Bronx, New York, and received a B.E.E. degree from Manhattan College. He was employed by Sperry Gyroscope in New York as a field engineer and later as a technical writer. He began his real estate appraising career in 1966. He was married to Eileen Slattery in 1962. The family moved to Pittsfield in 1973 and eventually opened Murphy appraisal. After his faith and his family, his greatest love was the outdoors. He was a founding member of the Berkshire Knapsackers. He was chosen to receive the William Foley award in 2005 presented by the Berkshire Benevolent Association for the Blind, sponsored by the Berkshire Eagle. His talent for writing led him to challenge the thinking public through his many letters to the editor. He was a champion of the pre-born. He is survived by his wife Eileen, children Mary (Brad), Betty Ann, Jim (Helen), Tom (Martha), Peggy, and Nancy (Chirag), and grandchildren Althea, Sinéad, and Caleb Lamel; Amelia and Órla Murphy; and Oona Patel. Eileen and Nancy,

So sorry for your loss. I read it and it didn't sink in until a few days later when Kelly mentioned it. By then it was to late to come to the services. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Eileen: Wish I could be with you and the kids to give you my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of one great and talented guy, but I'm in Florida for the winter. Please know that I'll pray for the happy repose of his soul, and for all of you. I'm sure Callie will find him among the saints and will introduce him around. With love and prayers, Dave Murphy Sr.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
