Memorial Day 2025
To Shawn: your laugh, your loyalty, and your courage live on in everyone whose life you touched. We miss you and think of you often, brother.
We remember. We honor. We carry on.

To the Edwards Family: Your son lives on with us, we carry his memory and his service with us, we smile at his memory and cherish the time we had with him. We do not forget. The moments in our lives we think of Shawn, we think of you, and know your love is known and our love for our fallen brother and his memory is never forgotten.

Shawn - It's been a long time brother! You are remembered, thought of often, and very much part of our memories -- especially all the joking we had between our teams in the motorpool in Kitzingen, Germany!
On the eve of Veterans Day (and every Veterans Day, 4/6 and 4/23), I'm thinking of you ... you are very much in my thoughts! We've lost too many too soon.
I wanted to make sure you know you are remembered, loved, and still apart of our lives! Forever and always brother!
With love, respect, and brotherhood!

To Shawn's family:
Shawn was a jokester, dished it out, always positive, and a joy to call a brother! I was lucky enough to have met his mom and sister on their visit to Germany - you are a lovely family. We all continue to celebrate Shawn and he is forever with us and never forgotten. With love - Rob

Shawn. You were the closest thing that I had as a little brother. Childhood memories of you are abundant, as the 4 of us were always together. Whether it was walking to the bus stop, playing Nintendo or going to garage sales with your mom, there werent many days in between that we didnt spend it together . I will always remember you as the little 8 year old boy you were the last time I saw you. Carefree, rambunctious, and dont forget that curly hair. You will always be in my heart. I think of you often. Continue to look over us. Love you. Miss you.

Shawn , I did not have the privilege of knowing you but I sure feel like I did as my boyfriend , your best friend Marc , talks about you constantly. Over the last year I've heard so many hilarious and heartfelt memories the two of you have shared. Thank you for being Marc's best friend and on this Veterans Day THANK YOU for your service and for your ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Marc sat with me reading all of the posts and stories shared here the other night by family , friends and fellow comrades. You are NEVER forgotten!

Dear family of Pfc. Shawn C. Edwards,
We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.
Very Sincerely

I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.
But I salute you; allow me the honor

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

Gardens of Stone
Will you lay me down, in a garden of stone;
When your needs are great, will you lead me home?
Should my load grow hard, will you help me then;
In my darkest hour, as will stand and defend?
When I am sent away, to a foreign land;
Marching a thousand miles, through the burning sand;
And wipe the blood from my face, with your trembling hand;
…if I give myself for you?
Will you write my name, in the Book of Life;
When my time draws near, in my toils and strife?
Will you remember me then, when I’m dead and gone;
And my life is done, will you still remember me?
When I am sent away, to a foreign land;
Marching a thousand miles, through the burning sand;
And wipe your tears away, with my dying hand;
…if I give myself for you?
Would you lay me down, in a garden of stone;
…will you still remember me?

this is for you Liz, Glen, family & friends of shawn's...
More than roses (No greater the love)
(In memory of all of those dear friends and family whom have answered the call, and made the ultimate sacrifice for sake of those who they, themselves loved.)
*opening spoken softly (whispered)*
I lay down these roses, upon your resting
In a land where winter seldom falls
Ohh…I wake up crying to nothing but silence
And in my heart the sorrow calls out
…You touched my soul, and changed my life
…You were the light that led my way
(…The truest light of my life)
No greater the love, than you show me now
So pure and so true, like a rose you laid down
No greater the love, that you still show me now
Everywhere the heavens show...
Anywhere the wind will blow…
I lay down these roses, upon your resting
On your cold gravesite, as winter falls all around
I wake up to silence, as teardrops all fall down
In my heart your love will always be found
...You touched my soul, and still change my life
…As the truest light of all
No greater the love, than to lay your life down
For the ones that you love, in the fires of the fight
No greater the love, than you still show me now
From the first time we met, to the day that your time finally ran out
You made me believe in, something so much greater
For the first time, in oh so very long
But then in a moment, the wine turned to water
Then falling like teardrops, from God on high
On the hard, cold winter’s day, through my tears I stand, proudly in praise!
No greater the love, than you show me now
You were everything that I cared for, and that I cared about
No greater the love, that you laid your life down
Anywhere the wind will blow…
Everywhere the heavens show…
…every time the heavens glow!
(…Like light in the darkest night)
*instrumental passage with dedications (to the fallen) dubbed over*
No greater the love, than you still show me now
You stand for everything I care for, and what I care about
Ohh…no greater this love, that you lay your life down
Everywhere the heavens show…
Anywhere the wind will blow…
No greater the love…
…you laid down…
…more than roses
Every time the heavens glow…
…you still show me…
And I’m still so very…proud…of you!

To the Family of PFC.Shawn Edwards:
THANK YOU!!! Only those who have experienced such an unfortunate loss can truly understand how you feel. On behalf of my family and millions of Americans we wish you God's Best as you reflect, as time goes by, of the wonderful times you, and friends, shared with Shawn.
America has many strengths, and one of the best has always been those who are so ready to serve in the military. Shawn was another fine example of the zealousness of youth to help others, even those in another country, despite the risk of losing their own life, so that others may have a life that provides freedom and opportunity to be all that God wants them to be.
May your memories of him sustain all of your family members & friends, for your lifetime, as you remember his desire to serve others. God Bless your family and may you have a blessed, safe & merry Christmas.

Just wanted you to know how very sorry I was to hear about another young man killed while serving his country. I to have lost a son in Afghanistan 8-31-03, Pfc Adam L. Thomas. Like your son Adam was bored and wanted to do more. He was a sniper in the US Army. I'm sure we will meet at one of the Illinois memorials etc. Its been 8 months and I still believe its just a bad dream. Thank God for other familes who have gone through this as they are my lifeline. Noone will fully understand what you are going through, its a tuff road, but with family and faith hopefully you be what we call somewhat "normal"! You will hear hes a"HERO" so much and that he gave the ultimate sacrifice but that wont change you missing him every second of every day! I had the privilege of working with Shawn before he went into the army. He always had a hello and a smile to give to everyone at work. Shawn had an infectious laugh and always seemed to put everyone he was around in a better mood. I remember his last day of work before he left, Even though I only knew him as a co-worker, I was very proud of him. It took a lot of courage and strength to join the service during such a unsecure time for our country. I really wish I would have had the opportunity to get to know Shawn better. But what I do know of him will be greatly missed. Shawn was and always will be a inspiration to me and I am sure to everyone else whos life he touch. God Bless you Shawn.

I did not know Shawn, but my son, Dan, played baseball with him at York. It really hit home, to have a 20 year old, with the same birthday as my only son, die for his country. Losing a child has to be the most devastating event one has to endure. Thank you Shawn for your courage. I am sure you are already in heaven looking down upon us.

Shawn, Robin, Liz, and Glen,
Although, you guys moved when we were just kids, you will always be considered part of my family. One of my fondest memories of Shawn was when Liz would take all of us shopping with her. Victoria and Robin would always hold hands throughout the store, so Shawn and I would always have to hold hands. Of course at the time, I hated it, and I'm sure he did too. I love the memories of all of us playing outside, and causing trouble. Shawn will never be forgotten! I love all of you guys and I'm sorry I couldn't be there.
Shawn, you are missed and you'll always be like a brother to me in memories.
All of my love,
Jessie (Sousa) Poncho

Shawn will always be the young boy playing baseball with Christopher. I remember him as a terrific kid and wish I had been able to see him grow into the wonderful man that I know he became. Shawn will always be a hero to me and my family.

Rest in peace, Shawn. Though I do not know you or your family, you have given what hundreds of thousands of Americans have given thoughout our history, and what you have given is the ultimate sacrifice, and it is what differentiates Americans from most others- The knowledge that you might pay the ultimate sacrifice so that others may have what we have- Freedom. I remember when Shawn and his family moved to town and he and Robin started at Conrad Fischer. We were but 9 years old! Shawn was always a nice young man, and I spent a lot of time in junior high school hanging out with him. He always had a smile on his face and knew how to put you in a good mood. He turned into a fine young man. My deepest sympathies to his wonderful family. You will not be forgotten Shawn.
