I did not know Carolyn in person, but her Girl Scout Handbook arrived today.
I ordered it from a used book site as I was interested in what girls were taught prior to World War II and after the Depression.
I expected practical information with charming illustrations from the original book, published in 1934.
Certainly I had not expected to see the actual membership card that Carolyn probably filled out in her own neat handwriting in 1937 when she was 13.
I was curious to learn more about Carolyn and found this tribute to her to which I add my own.
From the comments that have been left about her life, I join with others in celebrating a young woman who obviously followed the principles of Girl Scouts at the time. Her family values show clearly in the comments that have been put in this forum.
She seems to have connected easily with others, and now years after her passing, she has connected with me.

I first met Mrs. Leone on 7/4/10. She boarded the boat at White Water (which totally impressed me at her age of 85 years) with many of her children and grandchildren aboard. Mrs. Leone did not talk a lot on that boat ride, but it was notable how she noticed everybody; not only of her immediate famly, but also of newcomers, like me. Even before the boating, she had welcomed me in subtle ways; she scooted the Cheetos close to me so I could feel comfortable, she winked at me, and kept quietly in tune with me. I love her and all of you: Louis, & Daniel, George and Cherryl, Cathy and Jeff, & James & Helen & Phineas, John and Monica, & Rosie, Bill and Jennifer, Callie & Zoe, Margaret and Tony, Paul, & Margaret & Madeline, Joe and Elizabeth, Anna Marie, Kathleen, William, Andrew, Therese, & Marguerite, Carolyn and Bill, & Jack, (& Johnny & his Mom), and all of each others friends. You all are the family I always dreamed of. I too am grieving; I thought I had more time to get to know your Mom, and am sure would have greatly benefited. Mrs. Leone lives on in each of you, so my loss is not really loss.

Our Deepest condolences to the entire Leone family - especially to Joe & Elizabeth who are the only family members we know. We are Joe & Elizabeth's neighbors across the road on Hyw A in Brooklyn, WI. We adore Joe & Elizabeth, Anna Marie, Kathleen, William, Andrew & Terese. The Leone children are only second to our 8 grandchildren. How proud your mom must have been and what a wonderful life she led.
Peace & prayers for the entire Leone family.

I knew Dr. Leone to be an excellent physician when I worked at Northwest Community Hospital. When I met Mrs. Leone, and saw how much he cherished her, I realized they had a very loving and special relationship. Beautiful people they were. Cordially, Harriett Abernethy

When I heard that your mother had died, I had this sudden craving for pasta with green sauce--the most remarkable food I'd ever eaten in my life, when I first encountered it at the Leone house sometime in 1965. She had a wonderful life, your dear mother. And I'm so grateful to her for welcoming all of her children's friends into her home, so graciously. It's hard to imagine that kitchen without her in it. I'm thinking of all of you today.

I am sadden to hear of the passing of your dear mother. She was such a sweet and loving lady. She always made me feel at home whenever I came over to visit and play with Joe and his sibblings. I will never forget the invites I had to the summer home in Whitewater and we would all sit around the table and play cards after the dinner dishes were washed and dried at her request. Also the Christmas caroling that I participated in with her and the family too. Great times! May our Lord Christ Jesus keep you ALL in this time of sorrow. John Sachtschale

Carolyn enjoyed a wonderful life which she shared with Dr. Leone. Together they raised a family that reflects their values and reflects their view of life. I always admired Carolyn's regal bearing and how she always seemed to be calm despite whatever adventure or controversy was engaging the many personalities in their family. I loved watching how she calmly went about things no matter what was happening in their household.
May her memory be eternal.

I was so sad to hear of Mrs. Leone's passing. Her husband went to school with my father and I remember having heard stories of their younger years. May God bless your family.
