Malcolm S. Mason

Malcolm S. Mason, 101, of Earlysville, Virginia, died at home on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, of natural causes.

Mr. Mason, born in the Bronx, New York, in June 1910, was a graduate of the Columbia Law School and had lived in the Earlysville area since 2003. Mr. Mason is survived by his daughter, Jan and son-in-law, Ed Freundschuh, of Earlysville; a son, Mike of New York City; a grand-daughter, Sharan Freundschuh Atak and her husband, Ertugrul Atak, of Istanbul, Turkey; and a granddaughter, Amber Freundschuh of Richmond. Mr. Mason was pre-deceased by his wife, Irma; as well as by his two siblings, a brother and a sister. Mr. Mason was an expert in federal grants law and worked as legal counsel in several federal agencies, including the National Labor Relations Board, the Office of Economic Opportunity, and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.Up to the time of his death, he was still serving as a Senior Fellow to the Administrative Conference of the United States. A private gathering of remembrance in Mr. Mason's honor will be held at a later date in Washington, D.C.

I remember fondly one summer him trying to teach his two granddaughters and me chess. He was an amazing man!
