Stuart Powers Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Jun. 2 to Jun. 9, 2013.
Stuart Blackwell "Blackie" Powers Stuart Blackwell "Blackie" Powers always marched to the beat of his own drum, but that drum was silenced when he passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at age 66. He was born on July 11, 1946, in Petersburg, Virginia, to Elizabeth Williams Powers and Stuart Emmett Powers on July 11, 1946. He moved to Charlottesville at the age of two and graduated from Albemarle High School. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University and returned to Charlottesville, to manage King Lindsay Printing with his father and his sister, Nancy Breeden. Concert posters and tickets were regularly printed by the company, providing Blackie the opportunity to be actively involved in the local concert scene. His love of music and the connections he made even got him press passes to Woodstock. After this experience he spent a number of years producing wearable art and pottery, and was a founding member of the McGuffey Art Center. He continued to live in Albemarle County, surrounded by the countryside he loved, until his passing. He is survived by his daughter, Jessica Edge; granddaughter, Savannah Edge; son-in-law, Chad Edge, and former wife, Deborah Lingon, all of Richmond, Virginia, as well as his sister, Betty Tunstall of Roanoke, Virginia. A memorial service will be held for family and friends later this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Charlottesville SPCA. In the words of one of his favorite bands, the Grateful Dead, "What a long, strange trip it's been". Keep on truckin'.

I shared a flat with Blackie while we attended RPI. I'll always remember him sleeping with the window open and waking with about a half inch of snow on him.

Wherever you were, you made the world brighter, Blackie. My daughter was in preschool with Jessie and there were a lot of good times in the basement at McGuffey and out at the house. Keep on shining.

We went to schol with Blackie at Rock Hill...he was such a great guy, always friendly to everyone and boy he could make you laff..one in a class he got up to gave a report and he said my name is Blackie Powers and I Got A Secret. I am sure he is at peace.

I knew Blackie thru McGuffy and the C'ville scene. Once upon a time, I had one of your medicine shields; loved visiting your studio seeing what you all were creating... this bird has flown... sympathies to your family...

I remember Blackie well from my early days at McGuffey. We were neighbors in the basement. He and Deborah produced and marketed as fine a line of pottery as anyone has here since. Sorry to see him go still so young.
