Tony L. Hernandez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Tony Hernandez tried to join the Marines after high school, but was rejected because he was too heavy. He shed 25 pounds by running and dieting and tried again. By the time he finished boot camp, Hernandez had lost another 20 pounds: "We went to his graduation and we almost didn't recognize him," said Leroy Hernandez, his father. Hernandez, 22, of Canyon Lake, Texas, was killed in the Jan. 26 helicopter crash that left 31 dead. Hernandez was the crew chief on the aircraft, which went down during a desert sandstorm while transporting troops as part of security operations. Leroy Hernandez had spoken to his son by telephone not long before he died. "He said it was cold, that he didn't like the weather, that he was working his butt off _ the usual gripes," he said. "He didn't say a lot because he didn't want anyone to worry."

Missing you daily. I think of you all the times that we would need you to be there....like graduations, birthdays and holidays. You have so many new nieces and nephews that would adore you to pieces. I know you watch over us daily...but what I wouldn't do for one of your bear hugs. They always could make a person feel whole again. I sure do miss you and love you with my whole heart.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Tony L. Hernandez US Marine Lance Corporal. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

I know that joining the Marines was the only thing you wanted to do and I was and am very proud of you. Miss you and love you very much. love you Mom

My dear Tony, I was thinking of you tonight and missing you so much. I am very proud and honored to be your aunt. I very proudly display your picture in my office to show everyone how proud I am of you. I still think of all the times you, Charlie and BJ would play in the yard while Tracy, Chris and Dallas were at school. I miss your smile, laugh and all the jokes you played on everyone. You will always be in our hearts and we will never forget you. I love and miss you very much but I know you are watching over each and everyone of us. Aunt Lorie

Doesn't make me miss you any less tho makes me sad to realize you really aren't coming back. In Memory of Tony ~ (Debra Estep)

January 27, 2009

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Tony, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Tonight four years ago the Marines were knocking at your dad's door, and your sister was calling me to tell me that they were there. That was the worst moment of my life because I knew that you were not coming home ever again. That was the hardest drive I ever had to take. I know that you are looking out for all of us but I miss you so much tonight and tomorrow we will be visiting your grave. I know that the Marines was what you wanted to do and I also know that you knew you would not be coming home. I think that I remember that the most. The last nite that I saw you and Jackie, you gave me the biggest hug and one that you really didn't want to let go. I didn't want to let you go either but I knew that I had to, but my heart went with you. Your brothers don't talk about you but I know that they are thinking of you all the time like I am. You are with friends and family now but you are also with us all the time. I only ask one thing of you and your brethen and that is to look out for all the families tomorrow. I love you so much and miss you. Mom

In a little more than a week it will be 4 years. I look back on it and it seems like both ages ago and yesterday.
I know, like you, I do not go a day without thinking not only of my son but of all those that died that day.
I also think about those that did not that day and the feelings that they may have for surviving and going on with their lives.
I’m sorry that I have never written before. I guess it was not my time to do so.
Out of all that died that day I only knew Mike, but they were all brothers and because of that, they were all, my son’s.
The tears that I shed for him I shed for all.

Tony, I never knew you while you were alive but I have come to carry a very special place in my heart for you. Like your mother, I too am a marine mom who's son served in Iraq. It was not a nice place to be was it? Your sacrifice for all of us can never be repaid. The only thing we can offer you is to remember you everyday and thank the Lord that he made someone as special as you. When they layed you to rest it was done right next door to me and everyday when I leave home I look over at you and smile and say "God bless Tony today". And I know in my heart God is saying, "already done".

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Hey Tone, I miss you so much. We have been to Seaworld several time this summer and I can't help but think about you. At the begining of every Shamu show they honor all the armed forces by having them and their families stand as everyone shows appreciation for their hard work and commitment for our country. Tears fill my eyes everytime I see all the amazing men and women standing and know that there are so many more who are unable to be their. I am very proud of these people and so honored to be your cousin. There is not a day that goes by that I am not thinking of you, and remembering the pride you you had in becoming a Marine. I miss the surprise of your calls, but most of all the being able to say goodbye and I LOVE YOU. I know that you are here in spirit watching over all of us. Love you Tone.

Tony, I am thinking of you alot today and this evening. If I were a poet I'd write words that would fill the void and sooth the grief we feel in this physical world. I know your spirit lives free and many memories of you fill my head and leaves a slight smile.

With love for you and all the Hernandez Family - Aunt Chky.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Hernandez family in the loss of Tony. I did not know Tony, but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine young person and hero. May God bring you peace in your heart as you reflect on all the wonderful memories you hold so close. Please know that you are in my heart and prayers. Tony it has just been a little over a year since you were taken. You are a hero and you will never be forgotten.

I send each of you a hug from the most inner part of my heart.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

Tony, I feel so blessed to have known you. Which is to say nothing of how grateful I was for all that snow you shoveled during the President's Day storm in Annapolis! You made copper wire sculptures too while we were snowbound. Remember telling me that you must've gotten your artistic talent from your Mom? I want her to have them - please have her email me! I've got a flag out front flying for you. I touch it every day.

Thanks for touching us.

You are very special and I honor you.

Tony was one of my little brothers, and i miss him terribly. Especially since his birthday is coming up(11-25). We all think of him and all those that were with him that terrible day. I'm sure all the other families are having a hard time with the holidays just around the corner, just remember that they are ALWAYS with us, til we meet again. May god bless you all, and I pray for all troops livivng and deceased to be reunited with their families one day. I miss you Tone!!!

Tony, I am thinking of you again and it is a lovely memory. You are alive in spirit. I lovingly recall this memory of you:

I was visiting your dad and mom, you, your brothers and sister. We were all sitting on the carpet just playing around on bits of pieces of cards and toys. Just enjoying being close. You were a little boy, maybe age 6. With your big beautifull eyes you kept gazing at me siliently. You were deep in thought. I asked you what were you thinking and you took a deep breath. Then exhaled and said simply "I love you Aunt-Chucky". I melted. Your thoughts and words made me feel so loved. --

I love you too Tony. You are with us always in spirit.

God bless all our troops and may they come home in good health and safely.

Love Aunt Chucky

I grew up with Tony when he lived in Kansas. We became best friends right off the bat. I miss him madly. He was like a brother to me. It is horrible that he is gone, but he is a hero and will never NEVER be forgotten. I want to tell his family that I am sorry that we have to go through this but he is safe now!! I love you and miss you TONY!!!!

May God bless your family and ease your pain. I did not know Lance Cpl. Hernandez but as a fellow American I am very proud of his selfless sacrifice preserving the freedom so many of us all too often take for granted. May he rest in God's loving arms.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Tony. I did not know him personally, however I feel as if I lost part my extended family. My daughter's fiancee, Lcpl. Fred Maciel was on the chopper with Tony. Times like these make us so profoundly sad...yet so profoundly proud. We lost so much on January 26, 2005 and I know that the emptiness will be with us for a long time to come. However please take comfort in knowing that your family is in our prayers everyday. Our loved ones are heros and I personally find solice in knowing that they are in a better place. May God bless your family and may you find peace in knowing that someday you will be reunited with Tony.

With much love and saddness,
