JOHN VERSLUIS Obituary

John E. Versluis "Our Hero" John Ephraim Versluis, 68 years old, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother and friend passed into the arms of our Heavenly Father on March 13, 2011 at his home in Sandy, Utah, from a brain tumor. He was born April 2, 1942 to James Adrian Versluis and Esther Virginia Gamble in Salt Lake City, Utah. Married Utahna Rose Asay on November 2, 1962 in the Manti Utah Temple. They have seven children, 20 grandchildren and two great grandchildren whom he loved dearly. John spent his career in the trucking industry. He worked for REA Express, Roadway Express, Consolidated Freightways, Yellow Freight and most recently as a driver for Deseret Industries, a job he loved very much. He was a very hard worker and lived by the motto that his father taught him, "Always work harder than is expected and take less than you deserve and you will always have a job." He served in the US Army for eight years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, going to the shooting-range and spending time with his family. He will be especially missed by his K-9 shadow, Bear. Survived by his wife, Utahna; his children, Scott (Tiffany), Rob (Marvin), Tony (Brenda), Tahna (Steve) Elwood, Susie (Brett) Dawson, Joe (LeAnn), and Jordan (Crystal); grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Butch (Susan), Mike (Kerri) and sisters, Ruth (Ray) Smith, Eva "Jackie" Leon, Barbara Knowles and Kathleen (Richard) Perschon. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Lake Hills Memorial Mortuary, 10055 So. State St., Sandy and Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the church. John was a great neighbor, when we first moved in and were trying to put a lawn in, I went to the store for something, came back and he had dug up his parking strip and put his grass on my park strip to get it started. I also remember on Sundays he would pull a silver dollar out of my sons ear and give it to him, hes saving those dollars still. John was sincerely a nice and giving man, you will be missed.

Dear Utahna and family,

I was so sorry to hear of John's passing. He was my Scoutmaster when I was a teenager and helped me get my Eagle Scout. I have many fond memeories of the fun we had when we went fishing together at Strawberry Reservior. My first Rabbitt and Deer hunting trips were with John. He loved life and being outdoors. He always took the time to be a friend to me and I am so proud to have had him as a friend and fishing buddy. I will really miss him.

I have great memories of John as we grew up a few houses away. My father, Doyle, had muscular dystrophy and had occasional need of physical assistance. As a young boy, I remember John coming over and physically picking my dad up. John was a great man, full service and always made others feel loved (obvious in his smile). May God bless the Versluis family. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

My best wishes to all of you. I always felt such love whenever I saw Uncle Johnny - and can feel the warmth whenever I even think about him. He was goodness itself.

To the Versluis Family: I am sorry to hear about your father, grandfather, brother, uncle and cousins's passing. I know that he is in a better place and you will be reunited with him again. He will always be watching over you. May the Lord bless you and your family at this sad time in your life. I didn't know him personally but I know his brother Mike and if he is the same kind of man has Mike then he is really a nice guy and funny.

Versluis Family,

May you feel the love and support of all those around you. John was such a wonderful guy and my heart breaks for you all! Words cannot even be expressed to tell you how to feel, I can say he was a fighter and he was a man with a FUN sense of humor- I was honored to know him and I feel more honored to have had even a little bit of treasured time with him last summer making sure he and your mom and bear of course were out of the house safely, what spunk he had and I laugh at that memory he wanted bear out of his cage, I was carrying the cage and Utahna left and was talking to other neighbors and he told me in his expressions he wanted bear out of his cage, I told him I didn't want Utahna to get mad and he lifted his hand up and put it towards his lap as I sat the cage on his lap he opened with a bit of struggle but much determination and he got bear out- he smiled from ear to ear and I said "your going to get me in trouble" he said, I am the boss, and he just laughed-

I loved how he would ALWAYS drive in his truck down the street with a BIG ole' smile and honk and his hand out the window with a wave, I will never forget him making sure when Trent was outside the beep would go on a few more times and Trent would grin from ear to ear and yell with excitement- those little things made Trent's world, it was the neighborhood that made it so much easier and we felt the love of everyone.

Wow, how lucky he is to see Trent run and yell and talk up a storm- I am jealous.. I pray that you all will take care of your sweet Mom, it's a tough road taking care of someone and then feeling like you don't know what to do with yourself. May his memory live on through his legacy, he will NEVER be forgotten..
I love your Family and God Bless.
