Grace Manning Obituary

ALFRED — Grace M. Manning, 88, died at home, where she wanted to be with her loved ones, on May 1, 2012 — on May Day, the day she would leave May baskets on the steps of those she loved.

Grace was born at home in Acton on Aug. 26, 1924, the daughter of George and Hazel Irene (Sanborn) Pillsbury.

She graduated from Sanford High School in 1943.

She was married to Charles Manning and they raised two children together, sharing 35 years of marriage before his untimely death in 1981.

Grace enjoyed cooking, baking and canning the fresh produce from their yearly gardens.

She was a stay-at-home Mom until her children were teenagers. Then she went to work at Brooks Woolen Mill and was a dedicated employee until the mill closed.

She is survived by two children, John (Stephen) Manning and wife, Kim, and Edwina Martell; three sisters, Lena Sanborn, Janette Tarbox and Doris Stanley; two grandchildren, Stephen J. Manning and Katie L. Manning; many great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, and her three sisters, Louis Mee, Mildred Dolye and Ethel Day.

A graveside service was held on Monday, May 7, at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
