Tad Lanford Obituary

SAN ANGELO Tad Lanford, 53, of San Angelo, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at Sierra Vista Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Services are under the direction of Johnson's Funeral Home. Tad was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in Greenville, Texas, where he graduated high school in 1976. He moved to San Angelo and attended Angelo State University. Tad immediately began his retail business career with a job at Sound Box which he ultimately co-owned with Brad Bratton, where they were known as the "Good Guys." In 1995, Tad and business partner Rodney Bratton began Bratton's Home Furnishings which later became Ashley's Furniture Home Store. In 2007, Tad added Ashley Furniture Home Store locations in Abilene and Wichita Falls. Tad gave much of his time to coaching his daughters' numerous soccer and basketball teams. He loved each and every girl and they loved their "Coach Tad" too. The families of his special teams, Attack and Swish, were an extension of his own family. He also gave of his time at CASA, San Angelo Soccer Association and Trinity Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school. He was also a teaching member of the Friendship Sunday school class at Sierra Vista Methodist Church. Tad's greatest joy in life was his family and friends. His fondest memories were of his two young daughters starring in the "Think Brattons" TV commercials. He also took great pride in his grown son, J.T. Tad had a heart of gold and never met a stranger. He always gave so generously of himself, including his last gift of organ donation. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Stephanie; and their two daughters, Kymberli of College Station-ATM and Kassidy of San Angelo; his son, J.T. Lanford; J.T.'s mother, Suzi Reynolds; brothers Jon Lanford of Farmington, Mass., Tony Lanford of Marble Falls; sister Darby Deihl of Dallas; mother and father-in-law, Joy and David Oates of Brownfield; sister-in-law Stacey and husband Richard Carter and their children, Blake, Brooks and Brandt of Shallowater; a special grandmother, Frances Oates of Loop; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Devin Bates, E.J. Bible, Richard Carter, Warren Conway, Randy Hutchins and Danny Kiser. Honorary pallbearers are Brad Bratton, Rodney Bratton and Shawn Wilkins. 1Cornithians 13:13, "And now these three remain; faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love." The family requests that donations be made to the donor's favorite charity. Family and friends are invited to sign the online guestbook at johnsons-funeralhome.com.

Stephanie, JT, Kymber, and Kassidy - words cannot adequately express my sorrow for you and your loss. Tad was a gentle giant and a very good looking one at that! Times are really tough right now and sometimes it feels there is no way out. I'm so sorry. Please know you are all in my heart and prayers. I pray for God to wrap you in His loving arms and give you peace and strength. (Travis Mackey's Mom)

Stephanie, I don't know if you'll remember us (Brooke Addams, formerly of the radio station, and husband Aryn Corley, former youth leader at Trinity Lutheran Church)...but we were devestated to hear about Tad, and so so sorry for your loss. Like everyone, we both have great memories of Tad! I, personally, learned SO much from him about "promoting"...and GIVING. He always talked about how much he loved his girls, and was very inspiring when speaking about his Christian faith. We'll continue to pray for you, the girls, and JT.

Stephanie and children, I am thinking of you all in this difficult time. I know Tad is truly a kind man. Tad assisted my son Patrick one day when the jetski trailer came unhitched from Patrick's truck. After many cars passed Patrick by, Tad was the one who took time to stop and help him. It is a sweet act of kindness I will always remember. My thoughts and prayers are with you all--Patrick Pape's mother, Annette Johnston

Stephanie-Jennifer (JT) and I will never forget the lessons learned from Tad during the Orange Crush/Attach 88 years. We had lots of fun and Tad was a big reason for that. Even though it's been years since we spent time with y'all, we will miss him and still miss you. I was looking for something to wear today and found myself looking at my Attack sweatshirt and just started crying-I didn't know I still had it. I can't imagine how hard this must be for you and the girls-his whole world seemed as if it revolved around you guys. I have no words of wisdom, just know that you have Jenny's and my love and prayers during this time and hope you can remember what a great guy he was-which you know better than I ever could. He was kind of a hero to us and I don't know how to mourn a hero-crying a lot is not getting it. I know this is long but I just want you to know we loved all of you for your kindness and rides to tournaments and we will never forget a minute of it. Tad (and you) were a big part of our lives all during Jenny's soccer years and those are memories I treasure and always will. My heart hurts for you, Stephanie, and I hope you heal and come out okay on the other side of it.

He was like a brother to daddy (Rodney's own words) and daddy misses him horribly!!! He was a well loved man to all. Our lessons are learned from the ones we love and are closest to and he gave us a strong role model to follow and learn from. I hope that we all will take that love he shared and pay it forward as he would want us all to do. He is a great man!!! One day at a time, God is holding our hand walking us through this life!!! To the family, especially the children, I say I am so sorry. Your Dad was a good man who did many many good things. Remember who he was and what he meant to you. There are millions of memories. Don't let one moment in his life define your relationship with him. Don't try to understand for you never will. Just know you Dad is loved and protected by our Heavenly Father and that you will be with him again one day. Even though it will hurt remember him every day. Talk about him all the time and keep his love alive. Tell funny stories and talk about how much you love and will always love him. Your love will only grow and he will always be with you.

December 3, 2010

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I will always remember Tad as a coach, competitor but most of all a family man. He had a love for his wife & kids and not just his own kids but all the kids who's life he touched. You knew if you played against one of his teams you were in for a fight..the guy just simply loved working with the kids and personally that's how I'll always remember him. My prayers to his family..he certainly earned his seat in heaven.
