Daniel WINNICK Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Sep. 3, 2010.

WINNICK, Daniel (Dan) Adam It is with great sorrow that we announce the death, on August 29, 2010 of our dear Dan. Left to mourn are his parents, Jim and Penny, brother Nick (Felicity O'Connor), grandma Cecile Paisley, many aunts and uncles, including Debbie Paisley (Gord Schnell), cousins and all of his very special friends. Dan was born September 25, 1984 in Calgary. He adopted Vancouver as his home, apprenticed as a carpenter and gained a family of fine friends in the city he loved. He was independent, artistic, musical, intelligent, articulate, generous, kind, loving, intuitive, empathic, funny, fun-loving and GOOD. He loved to read and share his thoughts and ideas, earning him one of his nicknames, Words. He loved to sail - to feel the freedom of floating with the breeze listening to the soft sounds of gliding through the waves. Most of all he loved the people in his life, his family and friends. Through these deep and meaningful relationships he recognized his talent for helping and supporting others, leading him to choose a new career path in counselling. He was planning to begin this study in the fall. The world is a better place because he was here and shared it with us. He will be deeply missed by the many who loved him and whom he loved so well in return. Penny and Jim express their deepest gratitude to Dan's wonderful friends for their care of him in life and their compassion for us following his accident. We are also exceedingly grateful to all of the capable and compassionate staff of ICU and BPTU at VGH, most especially Dr Brian Cho, Matt, Ryna, Fr Joachim, Dr David Evans, Nigel and Sophie. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 2 pm at the Unitarian Church, 949 West 49 Ave, Vancouver. Reception to follow.

Dear Jim and Penny: We let time go by and loose touch, and then sometimes it is too late. This is just such a sad way to bring us into contact again. I cannot attend your son's funeral, but will be with you in heart and thought. Many hugs and care.

Jim and Penny,
Though it had been the longest of time since we have been face to face, and your children were so young at the time, you and your family have sprung into conversation from time to time. If Daniel was anything like you Jim, then he left a mark on people, like you have left a mark on me. Barbara & I know all too well the great mystery behind God's great plan when someone so full of life, energized for the future, and capable of handling it, is taken from this world and from us.

You have our most profound sympathy and our utmost respect.

Dear Jim and Penny
Thanks for calling Linda to let all of us know.
You have been much in Carolyn's and my prayers, and your sorrow lifted up in the context of our worship here at St. John's. I hope to be in attendance to worship with you at the Funeral Mass. For you we pray: "Peace of Christ to pass all understanding"; and for Daniel: "Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon him." Amen.

Dear Penny and Family,
We are so very sorry to hear about the loss of your son. I have not seen you since high school. Ironically my daughter Kim Brown last week expressed her sadness about your loss - not realizing until today that we both know you. Kim from Village Square CHC. What a small world. Take care and God Bless you and your family.

To Jim, Penny & Nick Winnick:
Even when we were kids, Dan was different. I didn't have the words for it then, but looking back now I know that he had innate integrity of the kind that most people can only hope to acquire as adults.
And as adults I think we moved in some of the same circles. I wish our paths had crossed. My mother, my father and I are so very sorry. Our hearts go out to you.

I can still remember playing elastic gun wars and video games (Golden-Eye), almost every weekend of junior high at the Winnick home. I remember the camping trips that we took and growing up together through the years. Dan, you were a great friend and the memories will never fade of the great times we shared. Jim, Penny and Nick, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

You didn't have to know Dan long to know what a wonderful person he was, and anyone that ever met him, even for a few minutes was a very lucky person. An amazing person taken way too soon, we could all really learn a lot from a unique individual like him. I'm glad I had the chance to unite the Sherrifs, and I couldn't see anyone more deserving of the GOOD one. My condolences and love to all.

What can you say that hasn't already been said? I first met Dan in 2005, and in the few short years I got to hang with him before his move to Van I got to know one of the kindest, most selfless individuals I've ever had the privilege of knowing. He made a strong, lasting impression on me and was a role model of what a great person, friend, partner, brother and sibling should be. Dan, I will miss seeing your glowing smile (and moustache) everytime I pass through Vancouver. Shine on, brother -- we'll never forget you.

Dearest Jim, Penny & Nick,
We love you and we love your sweet Dan. In your own words, this is unimaginable and nothing prepares us for such a time or situation. May your hearts be comforted in knowing your son gave and continues to give so much love to all who know him. We are with you in every moment of grief, sorrow and healing.

As I struggle to come to terms with the fact that Dan never got a chance to see how much his friends and family came together in support during the weeks after his accident, I feel that every time he was busy lighting up a room with his smile, he knew how much he was loved.

A true gem, I will miss Dan with all my heart and sincerely treasure every memory I had the chance to create with him. Shine on, Dan boy. You've always been a diamond.

Mike and I are so sorry to hear about your loss of Daniel.

Our memories of Daniel are the summers at Whispering Pines. We always enjoyed seeing all of you and it was sure to be a fun time together.

If you ever need an understanding ear - we are here. Hold on tight to each other it does help and as Mike has said to me on many occasions it is ok to cry.

With heavy hearts - Love you - Mike & Cheryl
